A under D over does work but so does A over A, B over A, C over A..... I usually just apply CP to my underwraps and most of my Double wraps are either A over A or C over A....Most of the rods I build are on the heavy side. Underwraps are NOT necessary but can look cool and are not that big of a deal if you are not building a rod that you will be casting all day and have the time to do them.

152. Re: Punch
As a shooter as well as a rodbuilder I have punches made from cartridge casings from .25ACP to .50bmg as well as every gauge of shotgun. Polish an edge on them with a belt sander and you are good to go. Most sizes of spent brass free at your local shooting range.

I use my thumbnail as well. Even sand it to shape, polish it with clear and then scuff it up to take off the shine. When the thumbnail breaks my hobby stops until it grows back. The best part is that it is FREE.

I am using the 2mm sheets mostly ecause they are carried at a certain megastore, although I have seen 3mm sheets elsewhere and even 6mm in white and black. Cut some pieces last night and when you are talking about 13 discs to make 1" of grip without compression that is going to be a lot of cutting and glueing. But the colors....Oh my, the colors. Was up late last night checking out Bill

I am going to be (I Hope) combining composite cork sheeting, cork rings, eva sheets and cut up pre-formed eva grips on my rods for a little something different. So Weldwood and Titebold III seem to be the ticket. Went to my local tackle pusher and was altogether BORED with the production rods out there. The new "Team Daiwa" surf rods have HORRIBLE guide placements and don't balance

I would like to know what kind of contact cement you guys are using as I am hoping to get into it myself pretty soon. Is it a spray on aerosol or a brush on liquid? Name brand?

There are also some nice thread tension devices pictured in the photo section of this site which is where I get MOST of my rodbuilding gear ideas.

Actually...No...And I use a lot of Madeira AND Flexcoat CP. Now wrapping light over dark is a bleep and the slightest inconsistancy in thread packing (my personal @#$%&) is going to stick out like a sore thumb but given your level of skill I would be far more likely to blame the thread. Any chance that the tread got contaminated with something that would effect the thread in such a way. Do y

Thank you for the reply Cliff. Unfortunately my first spacing setup was with the Green shock ring Fuji Guides and the second with DF SS guiges as I had a linited supply of the Fuji guides on hand. Luckily that problem has been corrected (Thanks Doc) and the build is on hold temporarily waiting for more of THE RIGHT guides. This rod is a test bed for me. Cord wrap grips, YLI Candlelight Metall

Michael You might want to give Coates & Clark Trilobal Thread a try. Per manufacturers specs the thread is not supposed to contain any lubricants. I am using it and so far all fisheyers have been narrowed down to greasy fingers and a cluttered wrapping area....All my faults and not the threads.

Jim This is a GARDEN RECOVERY BLANK! Yes, it is true, a firend's widow was using the rod blank as a couple of PLANT STAKES! Getting it clean was a nightmare. This is a fresh build for me and I have no clue as to how to progress. I usually just use an existing rod as a template to set up the initial spacing for a new build, but I don't have a blank that has even close to the same dynamics

Am I screwed? Old School 11' Lamiglass Mustard Yellow surf Rod w/metal ferrule. Guide spacing as set up tip, 9, 17, 24.5, 33, 42, 52, 61.5 (bumper), 71 Stripper guide is 26" from center of Penn Squidder line spool. placement under 12oz load with rod in rod vice looks ok. Problem is I have no more guides and as they are the Old School Fuji Hardloy Guides with the Green Shock R

I have some shell pieces that I am experimenting with now. Initial cuts are with a jewelers saw, shaping on a disc sander starting at 80 grit for rough shaping down to 220. Final polishing with jewelers buffing compound and a Dremel. Wearing a pair of safety glasses. A surplus gas mask with bio filtration cartridge (VERY uncomfortable) and have a 2 gal shop vac hooked up to the disc sander

Please note...I searched the archives FIRST, Keyword Abalone...All Dates....No dice. I am an avid abalone rock picker here in Northern California and have a bunch of shell to play with. I know that breathing the dust is EXTREMELY dangerous so I already know about serious ventilation and a sub-micron full particle mask, but would like some suggestions as to the proper setup of a cutting, grind

I made a 1-1/2" diameter punch out of a plumbing sink extension pipe.....sharpened it on my belt sander and it holds one @#$%& of an edge...cost about $2.50. Just a thought. You might look into the punch sets used to cut gaskets and such. Thay can be found in many of the larger hardware stores.

I feel your pain John...Going through the same thing myself. Lining up guides and testing placement always gives me a headache for some reason, usually accompanied with no small amount of verbage inappropriate to discuss on this forum. I would build from pool cues if I could get away from it. THEY are at least always straight if you get the right kind. I often use a reel with line centered on

Let me put my .02 in as I use sewing threads like Madeira, Sulky, and Coates & Clark Trilobal almost exclusively. Polyester or Nylon threads only.....Learned from personal experience that Rayon threads just don't work even though they come in great colors. I used sewing threads because I can purchase them locally.......See them, feel them, I have even taken rod blanks into my local thread s

Don't know what amazes me more...The fact that you took the time to explain the process in such detail, or that fact that you explained it in a mathematica manner that I almost understood. Math was never my strongpoint I am afriad. Thank you p.s. You aren't by any chance an ACTUAL Rocket Scientist are you?.....Pretty floored by your

Krylon Fusion....From personal experimentation....PASS....It just does not hold up well to USE even with a topcoat....It is also tough to get an even light coat from a spray can. I have switched to an airbrush and Createx Auto Air Paints and Automotive Grade clear coats with much better success. There are a WIDE variety of paints out there designed for RC cars that will work as well. An entry

I don't know where you fish for cats or how but personally I would consider a 7' rod to be a bit short for cats as I usually use 9' or better. I depends on location and presentation I guess. For a first rod why not try something a little different and quite easy to build like a split grip bumper spiral casting rod using a fiji plate reel seat and the accessory trigger that goes with it. I also

More info would be helpful. Location? Bait dunking or lure chucking? targeted species? Line Class? Ballparking it I would suggest a 8-9' Medium Action Moderate to Moderate-Fast Taper. Personally would use DF spinning guides as it will be a kids rod and may get some rough handling.

Paul- Also used to working with wood and not flexible things like eva....Used to do lathe turned hardwood bowls out of a wide variety of woods glued together to form the bowl blank.
