Chris, i,m a flocking fool..so you know i did this using one of the large graphite arbors for a ice rod, not a regular rod..using the contained flocking method it,s a piece of cake to do and the grip wears like iron and can take a beating..i used the graphite colored not the flex coat yellow though they should work as well and would be lighter..i used the reinforced gorrila tape to hold the reel

casting distance for me is mainly by far a function of line type and size ..for example i changed 5mm runners to 4mm runners and did not see any change in distance with 10# power-pro but i,m sure if i was using 6 or 8# power pro i would have seen an improvement..

the only inconsistant element of a fishing rod cast is the human element and the wind..

if your a hobbiest, and just build a few rods per year..hand turning is enough and only takes two or three hours per rod.i use a cooking timer and check the mixing cup as i go along..

i can,t remember the last time i wrapped a double foot guide of any kind..using a locking wrap on single foots made double footed guides obsolete to me..

understood Joe..it fooled me..lol..i,ve been using tapered eva grips and flocking them..just one wrap of reinforced gorilla tape over the foot..the flock makes it very easy to remove the wrap and reuse the tape many times over..never gets loose..

Joe, i really like those short tapered tennessee handles except i turn the taper around which allows me to bring the choke guide closer to the reel because the reel is cocked up a bit towards the rod..using braided line handles the sharper angle without a loss of distance..this is for lighter spin rods..

i don,t think it matters how much it deviates..the cast will fly in the direction of movement of the rod tip at the time of release..unless it,s a triple wing buzz bait..lol.

speaking as someone who still loves and fishes fiberglass, i have to wonder if there isn,t a limit to fishing rod performance..will the day come when rods are indestructable, light enough to cast all day without fatigue, using lines that have no pound test because they are impossible break..are we taking the fun out of fishing..maybe that,s why i still love glass and probably would love bamboo.to

the double uni is easy to tie and small if you don,t go crazy with the number of wraps..i rarely go more than 15# leader if i use a leader, so i guess that helps..

John, there is a CP called seymo sold by mudhole that is quite different from most according to my testing so far..i made a test wrap, applied seymo, let dry over night, and soaked it in a jar of water for 24 hours..any other cp would turn ver cloudy in just a few hours but seymo stayed very clear and hard..i,m thinking of trying it as a one part finish with three or four coats..also if you need

remember cp is not just a color preserver..it seals the wrap also which makes epoxy application so much less fraught with better leveling and less bubble issues..

maybe try making flocked grips from mudhoe urethane sticks using the contained flocking method described in rod builder issue 22 rticle 3..tough as carbon and some color..

Shakespeare used to sell ugly stick blanks..i built a spinnerbait rod on the light blank cut back to 41/2 or 5 feet..then sand the tip to get an even softer tip making it easier for the lm bass to suck the spinner bait off the bottom..this was in cold water(low 40s to low 50s) when bass would just sip at the lure..you could feel them pecking at the spinner but you could not hook them until you g

Norm, have you seen the cover of the new Rod Maker..are your wraps that fat..it looks like one gram of epoxy on each guide..lol..i shoud not laugh..if i built to sell, i would do everything i could to make the wraps twice as fat..fat sells..the irony is that those wraps have been CP coated..lol..i,m just surprised to see a rod like that on this magazine..it,s almost like an endorsement..i know To

i just don,t think a peformance oriented fly fisher wants the extra weight of epoxy saturated double footed guide wraps..a one part thread finish would appeal to them...the thread need not be colorful..when it comes time to renew the wire guides, guide removal and cleanup is a snap if Aqua Gloss was the wrap finish..AG is a thread finish not a CP but it has CP qualities if you care to use them, b

Hi Joe..if AG doesn,t come to market, i,m thinking that the Seymo CP may be a good substitute because it is a water soluble polymer just like AG, except AG seems to be glossier..i don,t know if it would be as good a blank only finish..more testing is needed..i,m not sure of it,s hardness also..but AG sure looks good to me..
