Tyler, with my repurposed cabelas panfish rod i use #4 line and get a comfortable 35 to 40 feet which is plenty enough especially from a kickboat..about the cost of rod blanks: i just don,t pay it..i build all my rods from E-glass blanks and use braided line to restore sensetivity to adequate.levels and i,m working on making e- glass fly rods..

603. Re: Thread Gaps
Most of my rod building problems are related to wrapping guides and espcially small ones..so i had to develope some work arounds and they are not pretty..lol. to attach a guide i started with a four or five wrap jamb knot then slid the guide under the last wrap and wrapped the thread from the ring down to the toe..i do not go over or off the guide toe but simply whip finish and leave a bit of the

about the telerod..i used to make them from cabelas panfish poles but they quit selling them a few years ago..the ten foot pole had a ferrule every foot and i put the guides on the ferrules...an eight foot rod would collapse to a thirteen inch rod..they were carbon not glass and did not come with guides since they were panfish poles..you just tied your guides on and had a new rod..i could make ro

I use a couple V-blocks clamped to my desk and a fly tying bobbin to hold thread tension with a washer or two slipped over the bobbin for added weight/tension..the V-blocks are mounted over the desk edge allowing free movement of the bobbin to the left or right..gravity and the bobbin supply more than enough thread tension to back up also..it,s a very mobile set-up..all i need is a table and two

i,m a hobby builder..i may have built six or seven rods this year but i did several rebuilds mostly trying different guide set ups, and wraps are short like Herb said..if someone gave me a powr wrapper, it would just sit there, besides i,m in no hurry and i don,t/won,t do surf rods..lol.

And still a trick caster can toss a practice weight into a cup at 30 feet each and every time..lol.

It sounds like what your saying is that the so called soft side position is most important for your casting accuracy..hence if not built by a custom rod maker, who knows all about this stuff, it,s probably not bullt for accuracy..lol.

610. Re: Fact vs Fiction
Hi Kent, i probably got this wrong, but to build the most accurate rod possible i should look for a blank with the strongest spine i can find and build it with the soft side up..right?

Because i don,t think as i look down at my rod and see the natural bend to the left or right as a help to my accuracy..lol.

I think most rods made today are some kind of blend for durability..the higher the glass content the greater the thud when tapped..

And don,t look down on E-glass and think it,s a lesser glass than S-glass..to me S-glass is just a little higher modulus E-glass and E-glass is just a little lower modulus S-glass..lol..but they price Sglass like it,s a carbon rod..i can take a six foot e-glass blank and cut off a half foot and it weighs close to a six foot s-glass blank and the cut back e-glass blank gains some frequency ..most

Thanks for the tips Roger..my main reason for poor vision is the lack of depth perception because of one blind eye..and now my sense of touch is getting poorer which makes it difficult to control small objects..i have my work arounds but my rods are less than perfect, however they still work just fine..i enjoy the challenge and fun of this hobby but now it,s just a little more challenging..lol.

maybe it will seal any conamination or maybe eliminate the need to roughen the surface for better adhesioon..epoxy seems to stick well to CP..

i like the rod he built..it,s not perfect but whoever built a perfect rod? OK, Tom Kirkman maybe..lol.

Has anyone tried appling a coat of CP on an old epoxy coat, before applying a new coat of epoxy?

B and D thread also, mostly B but mainly because of poor vision..

Gary, braid is a graphite rod killer especially high modulus..i love braided line because it is what i grew up with..then came super lines which to me meant super thin which m ade spinning more attractive to me..so i mostly spin fish and converted to fibeglass..i had to soften things somewhere and i like the fish fighting characteristics of glass..i get all the sensetivity from braid that i need.

00 will wrap tighter than A under the same tension, you may have to back off on tension for 00, especially on smaller diameters..

That guide wraps have to be saturated with epoxy or they will not be strong enough to fish with..

For a first buid Cal did petty darn good..my first builds were from kits and still looked like somebody was struggling..just making a jamb knot was a battle..lol.

there are some pretty descent kits out there for beginners to wet their feet..you don,t have to learn everything at once..that,s what makes crafting difficult for lots of people..they want to be instant experts..that,s a good way to kill the fun of any hobby..

Billy, that would be a treat..lol..but if half of what Kent says is true, why would any custom builder risk dealing with any of these companies..how much longer are they going to be around? besides the government is trying to shut everything down and hand it all over to the chinese through no fault of their own...lol.
