Hahaha... There is a learning curve in this, as in other pursuits. My first ordered was four rods a winder and a couple of kits with tools, thread and finish etc. My plan was to build two throw-away rods, to get my chops down, then the two I really wanted... What do they say about "TheBest Laid Plans?" Grin. My keeper rods arrived from Mudhole, but my throw-aways were back o

You can play with reel seat and spool angles, a collection of alphabet soup guides, trial and error placement, or just go with Microwaves and have a rod that is optimized for most reels.

Revolver, Acid Wrap, Spiral Wrap... These are all terms for a casting rod with the running guides on the bottom of the blank, like a spinning rod. Top Shots are generally saltwater leaders where the mono or Fluoro is inserted into hollow core braided line. The mono/fluoro is held in place without a knot, by the weave of the braid closing down on it, like what we used to call Chinese handcuff

I have used this inside splice to extend several rods. If you haven't already chopped up the blank, you should repair it for two reasons. First it costs nothing to try! If you don't like the result, the guides are recyclable, you are only out a reel seat and an EVA handle. Second, you need the experience. My #1 suggestion to you would be to buy two of the cheapest rod kits you can fin

There is another outfit that has it's big show in January or February called the NFL. They seem to understand marketing and demographics too. Fifteen different regions have hosted Super Bowls. Here;s the list... Miami Area 10 1968, 1969, 1971, 1976, 1979, 1989, 1995, 1999, 2007, 2010 New Orleans 10 1970, 1972, 1975, 1978, 1981, 1986, 1990, 1997, 2002, 2013 Los Angeles Metropolitan Area

I think any advantage in using Micro-wave guides would be on the cast, not the retrieval.

In my opinion, the current best buy is the Mud Hole hand wrapper and dryer with or without the new base. It's a system that can grow with you. The overhead tension arm is a useful feature. Especially when you have to back up a few turns. However, this tensioner is secondary to the actual thread tension, which is regulated by spring pressure on the spool. Having the pressure on the spool he

I own CP. It's handy as a glue to hold things together, but I no longer use it to preserve thread color. Once, in my CP days, I was rushing to finish a rod and had a white cloud appear in a wrap after the finish dried. I think the problem was moisture trapped inside. Now , for everything but black, I order color fast thread. I get the color I bought, and I'm not sitting around waiting and

When I was using big pre-loaded syringes, or trying to pour equal amounts into a plastic shot-glass I had tacky finish a couple of times. I bought two pair of tiny syringes from Bingham for a few dollars and started using very precise measurements. The problem went away... In cold weather I time the application of thread finish so that the rod will have at least 4 hours of drying time, durin

I have used 1/4 inch masking tape. The secret is to take the tape off once the finish has been applied. The longer you wait, the more chance the finish has to creep under the tape.

Does anyone know what the chemical properties of Bubble Buster are? It might be just be Windex, alcoholic and water, or something else, but whatever it is, I suspect that it is something quite simple...

You can expand the tube to fit. The tubes are brass and will stretch a half size no problem. Use a fork and twist the tube onto a tine, rotating a bit at a time and testing on the rod tip as you go.

Guide adhesives are just low temperature hot-melt glue stick, available at any craft store. The grip isn't very strong, and the "glue" rubs off without leaving a mark, so you can easily adjust the guides before or after they are wrapped. I started using these adhesives for holding single foot mini-guides, but now use it on all guide feet. At first I used too much and found it a bit

There are lugs on the tops of the jaws of my dryer chuck and a lock-nut on the back. After I tighten the lock-nut behind the chuck, I wrap a rubber band from one lug, around the rod handle and back.. I used to use three rubber bands, but find one is actually good enough to keep the handle, or blank, from creeping out of the jaws.

Rubber cement is used on the plugs for repairing tubeless tires, and for affixing patches to inner-tubes...If it is water soluble, does that mean I can only drive my car on dry days?

I built the full handle version of that kit last year, for my friend's Dad. In my opinion it' a great all-around rod. The cork was okay. I think the the guides were Pac-Bay Hialoy, but whatever brand they are, they were more than good enough. The free reel has a lot of plastic parts, but "Dad" used it all season with 15 pound braid, and it's still going strong.

As you are no doubt aware, EVA doesn't get reamed to an exact fit, like cork does. The preferred method is to ream it close, then butter the blank with epoxy before you slide and stretch the EVA into place. I have done a couple of EVA and VSS units using tape arbors on the reel seat. You need to test-fit the seat, mark the arbors location, then remove the arbors to install the grip.. I stick

I am not sure I understand the question, but I have used many of these reel seats, so I will take a shot. If the question is, "What is the ID of the cork or EVA grips?" It's about 1/4 inch, however, the front of the grip is hollowed out to fit snugly onto the back half of the VSS seat...Sort of a bayonet fit. You will need to ream about 2 inches of corm or EVA to fit the blank, the

I am going to bet against this. The rear of the Aero seat has a narrow opening. The top of the seat extends beyond the vertical axis, so it reaches over the top of the grip... Square cut tenons, that might fit into a casting seat don't fit without some hand carving, or machining to a smaller diameter.
