Adding Variable Speed to a Lathe

Has anyone used the Penn State kit to add variable speed capability to their wood lathe? Been considering it for my Jet Mini and I see it's on sale now. Would like to hear first hand reports before going down that road.

Is there a link where we look look at the 'conversion'??
Is it electronics based or mechanically based??
I have installed a lot of the VF (variable frequency) drives to machinery to have variable infinitely variable speeds as well as reverse. But I'm in Australia and have not heard of the Penn State system.
Cheers then]

Dave I would think the first thing would be to contact PSI and find out exactly what HP and speeds the conversion kit offers as I didn't see that in the sale flier PSI generally is fairly good with responses re their products

My brother got it for his single speed Jet and made his lathe a great little machine for the money. It is not for any of the lathes that have speed changes buy belt movement or all ready variable speed!

Tim, It is primarily for lathes that change speeds by shifting the belt on pulleys!! I didn't know there were any that didn't except the variable speed. It was made for the Turncrafyer, Jet, etc whic=h all change speeds by shifting the belt
