I am very happy with the Elixer line from Phenix. i have built on a few now but the 5'6" ultralight is my go to stream trout rod. Everyone who has tried it has asked for one.

I have been using the MHX line of ice blanks and have been very happy. I am pretty sure they make a power noodle model. Similar to the Famous Thorne Bros blanks. They also have the green tip.

I would say a 20 then all 12's or 10's. I like to run the smallest guide possible that will pass my knots freely.

I use a tack cloth that I bought from mudhole. But since you said that you wrap in an unfinished basement. Maybe you can mount a length of lets say 4" PVC in the rafters with a screw cap. This way when you call it a day you can slide the rod in the pipe and cap it. Then it will be clean when you get back to it.

Thanks for the response guys.
Andy basically all of the above. I havnt ice fished in about 10 years since that time I have taken up rod building. I am looking to get back out on the ice so I figured I might as well build up a few new rods. When I used to fish I just used the store bought and always thought they were cheaply made.
Roger, I know of thorne bros do you know what blanks they build o

Hello all, Does anyone have any ice fishing blanks to reccomend. Possibly higher end blanks. Not the usual 3 dollar blanks that most carry.

Bill I think you would be better off with 10mm runners since he will ne fishing 50 lb braid he will most likely be fishing a top shot of 50 lb mono. I know the knot is not real big but it may hang up. One more thing he may end up fishing some real cold conditions since that is when the cod fishing ay his best the real small guides could potentially get some ice.

Bill I would not recomend a cod jigging rod that short. will he be fishing private boat or party boats. length will be different. 7.5-8 for party boats 7ish for private.

The inshore heavy that Billy speaks off is a great choice I have two of them one trimmed an inch from the tip and extended to 7.5 feet handles jigs to 16 if need be and sinkers to 20 no prob. also have one uncut and built to the 7'2" it comes at also great and it to can handle the 16 but it is pushing it 12-14 feels great 200z sinkers if needed. Billy also has another great option in The Mon
