After checking with TFO they told me the male parts of the ferrule are coated differently and that it will show but as time when the rod ferrule stretches it will cover al of the grey area. that it was supposed to be that way??? oh well I'll just build it what do I care. but this seems logical enough to me the rod looks great other wise.

Thanks for the info Gene, I may just stick with 8 I don't want to slow the rod down I tested it wit 8 guides and 5 wt line and it threw it pretty good considering the weight of the line. I'm going to try your placement. since it is a little different from where I have them now. I'm not in love with the way they look currently under load. thanks a lot.

Hey Gene what would you suggest for guide spacing with a 9 guide set up? I have 8 taped on in the st croix suggested places but I would like to see how it looks and feels with 9. I tried to wrap my mind around it and got a head ache lol It looks and feels good now but what would be the advantages of 9?

I read somewhere even if you build it and give it away you may be responsable for the taxes based on the value you gave away I don't know if this is true.

I don't mind this thread going sidways at all. I'm still learning from this conversation. I am planning to use a single foot stripper guide for this 3 wt, is that a bad Idea? will it tangle? i have a size 10 aluminum oxide fuji single foot fly rood guide. Should I go double foot?

I 'm going with a #10 single foot stripper I ordered an #8 and #6 so I may use 2 but i'll see how it looks. i'm thinking i'l just go with the number #1 REC light wire titanium snakes all the way down from there. I ordered 8 but don't have to use them all. This blank is supposed to be green pearl I was going to try and match the color of green as close I can with the blank. I'm not good at pickin

It looks like St. Croix suggests 8 guides I will use 10. what is the closest I want to put the first stripper to the reel I guess around 56 " from the tip and then I'll just figure out the rest. So i'm going to use 2 stripper guides and 8 #2's and a tip top? I can always take one of the snake guides off if i want.

Thank you Drew, That was about what I was thinking. I'm going with the snake guides per request. I'm going to keep the wraps small and go light on the epoxy. I just really wanted to make sure it would be ok to run #2's the whole way down. and get an opinion on stripper guide sizes. I'm off to buy some stuff online!

I'm sure there are many opinions on this but I'm just going to ask and then not ponder this any more. I'm building a 7 ft 2 pcs. 3wt st croix flyrod. I'm going to use wire snake guides. how many should I use and what type of spacing. and do I need one stripper or two and what sizes. I am fine with all the snakes being the same size if that advise is giiven. mostly using this for small trout strea

I am planning on attending the rod expo in Feb. I have never been to an event like this before. I hope to gain volumes of knowledge first and foremost. I'm wondering if I will find deals on equipment and supplies. What I mean is should I plan on stocking up on blanks , guides etc.. or will the pricing be the same. Can I wheel and deal, should I have a wad of cash in my pocket.???

Ok back to the guide issue If I use a shimano saragosa 6000 for the reel I'm usually spooled with 20 or 30 # PP can some one please give me some suggestions of what guides I should use. Should I mess with these low riders or is that to difficult. Maybe the fuji BLCAG or maybe the BMNAG either way I need some suggestions for how many and spacing I have seen charts for this and I'm a bit confused.

Well thanks to all this is great feed back. I need to sit back and chew on this and formulate a new series of questions. I'm learning a lot about fishing poles lately. lol I'm 41and I I have fished in a lot of places mostly spinning and fly gear. I taught my self how to tie flies when I was 14. But I never really paid much attention to what I was throwing with. Recently I moved to the NC coasta

Ok I am planing my first rod build. I want to build a 9' 1pcs. surf/spin rod. I have been reading as much as I can and been shopping blanks online. here is what I'm thinking. I like the surf rocket LGSB1081M It is cheap and seems like a good choice. I have A shimano Trilejo rod and I love the grips It has. They seem durable and looks easy. I know I can get the shrink tub at MH And I'm anticipatin

I have a question that seems to fit here here. I am planing on building a rod for surf fishing. Has any one seen thread that is reflective. I have thread on some of my out door gear that reflects light very well. I thought it would be a good idea to make some decorative wraps out of that so a little bit of light would make it shine. Not as Ideal as glowing in the dark but a quick shine from an l
