While feathers have been used for artwork on the blank I'm not aware of any for reel seats. 1 - The process I used here is a mold and a 3/8" tube to cast in 2 - Silver Pheasant as a base and dyed Chinese Pheasant feathers. 3 - Turns like butter and polished with Plastix. 4 - A Reel Seat and Handle for a "Casting For Recovery" rod.

Sometimes things just don't go right. I mismeasured the length and cut it too short and added a piece of cocobolo to the front that would be hid by the hood. I then cut the tenon too short and it exploded on me. I have saved all the pieces, CA's them backt together and it will become for my personal use.

I made this from the bark of a red fir. I used 2 f Andy's burnt burl as accent and the tip and end is actually bark.

It seems that when the wife volunteered to help out at the 8 year old grandsons school once a week that also included the use of any of my rod building items if they helped out the school. I went out to apply some urethane to a hollow form and discovered I have no Gray Foam Brushes left. I used to get my gray foam brushes from either from the Orange or Blue Big Box Stores. Now I can't find

I second the notion of painting your own blank. Here's one I did in an "Orange Metallic Mist" I'm going to paint another blank for a personal build this weekend if the rain stops and this one will shout at you Stryker Green Pearl paint,

I'm seriously considering undertaking another new project and would like to gather some informatiion from those of you that build fly rods. What reel seat skeletons do you most often use and prefer? I don't care about the color/finish just the type: IE: D16; Alps B 101; BUL5; Lemke LC1 or whatever you prefer. Thanks, Ron

I've used White GG (and other PU glues) for years for grips and reel seats with no issues. Once it is dry it cleans up very easily by peeling most of it off if you use too much. I've also used GG as a finish on wood. What I've been using lately is LOCTITE® PL PREMIUM FAST GRAB POLYURETHANE CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE that I get from the Orange Big Box Store and it is around $5 for a 10oz tube.

That's a good idea Bill except the label is already on the blank from lamiglas. I'm thinking this blank was stuck in the corner of the closet when we moved into this house around 2006 or so.

I was digging my fly fishing gear out of the closet for my first trip to MT for this year, and the first time since 10-17-2012 when I tore both meniscus' in my right knee for the express purpose of chasing the Skwala hatch when I found a shipping tube in the corner. Inside it is a 4 piece Lamiglas blank labeled XF 108-6-4. This is a root beer brown in color. Can anyone tell me what I have?

Another thought provoking question. I'm a scrapper fan myself. I've been using a Poly Urethane glue (think GG type) lately for reel seats and handles. I do paint (usually white or black) the inside (hole) of the acrylic blanks before gluing. I also hate turning plastic ... this is what my lathe looks like after turning

I use what Mark Vogt posted on youtube about Ouchless Hairbraids and plastic/wood beads. If you have daughters and/or a wife the chances are you have these already. They are easy to make, easy to adjust, don't slip, and great for static testing,

I turn a lot of purple heart but mostly for pens with a bloodwood center band that I give away to disabled Veterans that have earned a Purple Heart. Don't be surprised if the purple hue will fade over time to a rich brown. i have lots of PH blanks that are brown and to get them purple again I set in a window sill after turning and in a few days it is purple again.

Another interesting and thought provoking subject. On another forum it seems the dremel is the preferred tool but I personally use a cheap 1X30 inch Belt Sander from a popular importer of fine Chinese tools. While you can buy cheap ($3.00) 5 packs of belts from here I prefer to use "Gold" AO belts that have a very flexible backing. I also personally recommend getting yoursel

Took awhile to download the file but happy I did. Very Nice! I have a piece of Lignum Vitae laying around here that just might make a nice pillar block for the shaft

Another thought provoking subject ... I tend to use whatever I have on hand at the time and for the most part its what I find at my local stores. For quite awhile now I've been using low expanding PU (Sicky Ass Glue) for my handles. Pro-Pox sounds interesting and will look for some info on that product.
