I always put a thin coat of Elmers glue on decals after applying them and before applying finish to the decal. Elmers dries clear and seems to "seal" down the decal. Works for me.

If I could add one thing that might help. Ive had the fish eye thing happen a lot on fish decals or labels several times. A trick that works for me is to put a drop of standard elmers school glue on it and smear lightly and thinly all over the area with your finger. Creates kind of a bond over the bad spot/s and comes out clear when coated with finish. Also works for me as a good practice to

I build most of my inshore spinning rods on St. Croix casting blanks. Seem to have a touch more backbone- to me - than the spinning blanks. I usually use the 2C66MF rated for 10-17lb line.

Scott, I use Krylon spray for a few coats followed with a few coats of Krylon clear. Seems to work well, but I also coat the entire rod with ProKote when putting on the final coat of epoxy after everything is wrapped. From what I can tell this works fine, but the Krylon left uncoated with ProKote would not hold up well. I think if you were to want to only epoxy coat the wrapped areas then the

I've always used a hair dryer for the first coat. Do need to make sure your bench is clean or stuff will go everywhere. Any bubbles that it doesn't get, I will trim with a razor before the final coat. For the second or final coat I will often use quick passes with a torch. More thin coats rather than thick coats seems to work best. When using underwraps on larger rods, may even use the hair

I put one coat of CP on it just for safety. Epoxied and it stayed fine. Thanks for all the advice. Much appreciated.

John,
I sprayed the decal with clear gloss enamel spray paint. 3 thin coats and waited about an hour between coats. This is what the instructions that came with the decal paper said to do. I believe you can find the info at Decal Connection on the whole process.

Been making decals on inkjet labels for years. Decided to try the water slide type and like them better. About to put the first clear coat over one I just did and wondering if it will stay down once the epoxy hits it. On the inkjet labels I would always dab elmers glue around the edge of the entire label to keep this from happening. Just dip a toothpick in the glue and lightly spread it aroun

Bill,
Last question - I promise. With the first coat of epoxy on, are you saying I should CP again 2 or 3 times? Seems correct, I just want to be sure. Thanks again!

Bill,
Used it because I needed a Burgundy color for a rod Im making. Thats the only reason. Never used it before. I might need to find a different thread if it is this difficult to use, although the color really is nice.
Sean, I coated it once yesterday and then today. 2nd coat had dried for 5 hours when I put the flex coat on. Maybe I should have waited over night as you said.

Paul,
I found out what "fish eyes" are! Put on 2 coats of Carsons Crystal Clear CP. When I applied the flex coat I saw them start to show up - the finish sort of "separates." Used to putting the first coat on kind of thick at the base, where the longest run of Maderia was and

20. Madeira Thread
You all may have answered this before. I am getting ready to build a rod with Medeira, which I have never used. Do I need to use color preserver with it? Think the answer is yes, but I thought I'd ask.
Thanks!

I usually just pull it part way through, snip most of the remaining length outside the wrap off with scissors and then pull the tag all the way through. The metallic skin usually remains at the pull through point and I simply pinch it between thumb and finger and pull it right off(toward the outside of the wrap). Confusing explanation, sorry.....lol.

I looked on Sage's site for Xi2 spacing and found nothing. If anyone has it, can they send me the sizes/spacing for the 8 weight Xi2? Please post or you can also email it to me at jsulli3686@aol.com.
Thanks!

Adolfito,
The blank is very light in my opinion and has good stiffness. Of all the Sage blanks Ive built, this is definitely the nicest one. Light and powerful feeling. I cant wait to use it!
Going to be working on it today and am leaning toward a blue/black with a metallic blue trim possibly.

I am building a Sage Xi2 8wt. This is the first 4 piece fly rod Ive made. Im assuming I will find the spline the same way I always do on a one or two piece rod. Do the alignment dots on the blank mark a spline or do they simply provide a quick way to align the 4 pieces?
Thanks for any help you can give!

Need some help on spacing of guides for a 30lb trolling rod. Blank is a Calstar RT-30. Distance from the guide side of the grip to the end of the Aftco roller top is 54-1/2". Grip is 10" EVA and below that is an Aftco UB2 Unitbutt. I have a 5 guide Aftco set and a roller top. Any suggestions are most appreciated!!!
