Thanks guys. The rod will be used for both freshwater and saltwater. Target species will be bass and carp, and redfish and sea trout. Can I go smaller than a size 3 snake guide based on the connections, or is a size 3 the proper size?

I am building my first fly rod on a TFO BVK 8 wt blank and have a few questions about the guides. I am just learning how to fly fish and very little experience. I have read through the forum, and am trying to decide between the titanium Minimas and the double foot Recoil snake guides. I have a few questions that I can't find answers for or found conflicting information on. 1. What size run

Tom, I was trying to avoid cutting the blank to save the warranty, but cutting or an inside extension are possibilities if I can't find anything. Chuck, or anyone else that has the Mudhole piece handy, it would be great to know the inside diameter. I thought it was 14mm, but if it is 15mm that would fit perfect. Roger, I will look around for some cheap used rods, thanks for the idea. Thanks f

I am trying to extend a Phenix X-13 crankbait rod to 7'-11" (5" extension plus 3.5" of overlap), and I want to use a graphite tube like the ones available from Mudhole. The problem is that the butt is 14.8mm and I can't find a tube that will fit it. Everything I have found is either too small (14mm inside diameter) or way to big. I would use a piece of a blank, but I don't have

I am going to be splitting a reel seat for my next build, and I want it to look like the ones Phenix uses on their MBX rods. Since my understanding is they don't offer the seats for sale, I was just going to buy a Fuji ACS seat and split it? My concern is that because it has the ribs inside it won't fit flush to the blank were I trim and shape it. Am I better of trying it with the standard ECS

Thanks Bill, I will have to order some of those as well. I also appreciate that you have both the inside and outside diameters of your winding checks listed. This is a big help when you are trying to cover part of a grip or reel seat with the winding check. I was hoping to also get that information for the Mudhole winding checks also to maximize options, but I'm not sure if anyone has it recor

Thanks for the replies. On my last build, I used a size 13.5mm ID aluminum swooped winding check and it came pretty close to covering the entire barrel while still allowing the nut to slide over it. I wanted to know if I could use a 14 or 14.5 mm ID winding check to cover more of the barrel, or if the increase would be too much. Also, since there are several styles, I wanted to know which size

I do try to build light rods, but the trimming is mostly a matter of comfort so I can get my finger on the blank, and I think if sized correctly the winding checks add a nice finishing touch to cover up the hole at the end of the threads. I may also do an epoxy ramp, or sand the foam arbor into a ramp on the outside of the threads. Can you elaborate on your bad results i.e. looks or breaking th

I have a few questions about some of the trim parts from Mudhole. Does the trim ring for the Fuji ECSM/ACSM reel seat also fit a Pac Bay Minima reel seat? Also, does anyone know have the outside diameters of the winding checks they sell for the CRB handles? I am trying to find which size will cover up the end (threads) of a size 16 reel seat, but still allow the nut to pass over the windin

Thanks Bob, will those sizes also be available in titanium and stainless guides? Any info you can get on dates would be great.

I have read that they are making smaller double foot K series guides, and a split casting reel seat. Any word on the release date of these products?

I have seen a lot of posts recently about choosing thread colors, and/or matching them to blank colors. I figured I'd post what I use to help me determine my color selection. It is basically a glorified color wheel, but also has the ability to determine contrasting and complimentary colors based on six accepted "eye-pleasing" color combinations. I use it to determine a primary

The guide wraps are predominately royal blue with only sunrise trim rings, so I was trying to carry that through the tiger wrap. I want the wrap be mostly blue with only sunrise undertones. Can this be achieved with three base threads, or should I remove the white thead? Thanks for the help.

I am doing my first tiger wrap, and I wanted to know how using 3 base threads effects the outcome of the wrap. The base colors would be black, white, and gudebrod sunrise, with a royal blue overwrap. The guide wraps are royal blue and sunrise, so I wanted some sunrise color in the tiger wrap. Would I be better off just using black and sunrise in the base, and having a more subtle effect?

I am going to be building a light swimbait rod that uses a Abu 5600 reel that has a moving pawl when line is being cast. Is there a general rule of thumb for sizing this guide with moving pawl reels? I know for spinning reels, some say to use half the reel diameter as the first guide, so would this guide be sized based on a percentage of the total side to side travel of the levelwind? The reel

Thanks Karry that is almost the exact layout I had in mind except with titanium guides. Any idea when these blanks will be available through distributors or on your website?

Thanks for the suggestions. I will have a look at both blanks. Karry do you think the tip would be light enough to fish with treble hooks? I'm not really familar with the characteristics of back bouncing blank.

I am looking for a blank to cast hollow-belly and smaller swimbaits, with a sweet spot around 3/4-1 ounce. The lures would be things like Sebile magic swimmers, Spro BBZ-1 shads, and 4"-6" rubber swimbaits on a weighted hook. Originally I was going to get a Lamiglas blank from the flipping/swimbait line, but it looks like it was discontinued (the 7'-8" 3/8-1 1/2 oz blank, but for

I went back and looked at a rod that I epoxied the threads about a month ago, and on some of the bigger guides I am not happy with the thread coverage. The rod has not been used, or even flexed really, and has been in my office the whole time. Can I add another coat of epoxy without any problems? I was going to clean them with rubbing alcohol first, but should I scuff them up too? If so, what

CP (color preserver) is pretty runny and takes awhile for it to dry, so you would have to hold the tag end in the CP for a long time (about 20 minutes or more) before it would grab the tag end. The method I use is to hold the tag end down with a piece of masking tape. You can see a video of this on Mudhole's site under rodbuilding 101>scroll down to videos>Part 5. It technique is basic

I have built several spinning rods following the primer from this page, and both have line slap when reeling when reeling in slack line. They are fine when the line is taught and on the cast. One rod is a 7' medium light rod with a 25 CYAG as the stripper using 8 lb fluorcarbon on a Daiwa 2500 Advantage, and the other is an 8' heavy rod with a 30 BSVLG using 15 Big Game on an Abu C806. I am referring to the round springs that go on the bolt, do office supply stores have those as well? I have some of the black clips, and I will try them instead of the lock nut, but I am looking to switch out my piece of rubber tubing for the round spring on the bolt.

Where do you guys buy those springs? I have been using a peice of rubber tubing on the bolt with a nylon locknut which doesn't turn, but the tubing gives me inconsistent tension because its folds over itself.

Like I said, I'm new with these types of reels, so thanks Mike and Bill for the help. I will use all micros for my new rod with the Revo.

Mike, you had me second guessing myself so I had to go outside and check. My abu garcia 5601 C4 has a levelwind that goes back and forth when casting, and I would consider that a pretty typical reel. I have an Abu Revo STX coming, and I will check that too, but when I handled one I remember it having a synchronized levelwind as well (i think). For reels like this, would you need some transitio

What about bass reels with synchronized levelwinds were the levelwind goes back and forth as the line is casting out? This is the case with most higher end casting reels. Would you use some transition guides in this case (maybe a 6, 5, and then 4's on out)?

Sorry for bringing this back from the dead, but do you happen to have the heights of BYAG-8JL, BYAG-8, and BLAG-8. I am building a spinning rod with a 25, 16, and 10 BYAG guides and trying to figure out the best transition guide to go from Y guides to fly guides on out to the tip. Do you guys have a preference, or do you go straight to fly guides? Thanks.
