I post this on a fiberglass forum but thought I would post here in case any of you have customers who might be interested in the blank I ordered a built a James Green fiberglass 10' 7wt switch. The blank weighed about 4oz and is mid flex. I used a 4' butt of burl and rubber cork installed the reel as downlocking and a 10.5" forgrip. With a heavier reel this balance out nice. James told me

I have an rx8+ 8'6 4wt I know it is a different beast but it ern's at 6.4. I use it for a differnent purpose than I bought it for, It is a very nice streamer rod with a 6wt line. I also have a 6'6 rx7 2wt I have never ern'ed but for a short distance brookie rod I use a 4wt. I have a feeling that blank would be a nice short distance rod with a 4wt line and dead with a 2wt but I have never tried o

You can turn willow just fine, unless it is a crotch peice or a burl it will look very plain.

Eugene, unhide your email or email me, and I will send you the link. The vapor was there second from the bottom series the last couple years and has been discontinued. I emailed them and they said the vapor 9wt was stiffer and more powerful than the BIIX 9wt which is on sale for $200 Bob

I don't build or fish heaveir rods often, but I want to build a rod mostly for pike. It may see some salmon and stippers if I ever make the trip I want too. All in all it won't be used more than 2-3 times a year so I don't want anything thing real expensive. I was looking at the the winston vapor and the quickline. I can get both in a 9wt for around $80. I like the looks of the ccs data on the qu

I agree that the fuji are overkill on a 2 wt. but not becasue of the weight thing a standard single foot guide on my scale weighs 0/2 .08g 0/1 .09g 1 .1g a fuji tlsg 5.5 weighs only .11 on my scale I would think that was impossible to feel Now if you want to go light then the recoils are the way to go size 1 weighs .38 on my scale for tops on my scale light fly top .29g

I drill it first, I then use a wooden tapered point on the head stock and a 60deg live center and turn it down. Very easy. Bob

I am stripping an 81/2' 4wt rx8+ with an ern of 6.5 I built a few years ago. My builing skills have come along way since then and I wasn't happy with the way it looked plus I wanted to go with single foots on it. I was thinking about painting it with either krylon and a clear or have one of my local auto body shps spray it. I did some searches on the forum and I am wondering will the extra weight

I did notice the Recoil tip I removed and weighed had a dimple on the side instead of the center, The tip is about 3-4 years old maybe it is the stainless version. I am going to ordered both and weigh them and also try them on the same rod. Thanks, Bob

Russ, It very well could have some epoxy in it but not much. When I built this rod I used the tip top glue stick things. Bill, Mostly it was reading pages of searches from the last 5 years on this site. I was reading on mostly mid to lighter weight fly rods which is mostly what I build. thanks, Bob

I do agree but if my measurement was correct, and everyone else were correct then there really isn't that much difference if any in weight.

I have been going back doing searches and keep reading that the fuji TFST are nice and light and weigh less than all other tips beside the recoil. I have read several places that the TSFT's weigh around .180-.200g for a 5.5 ring., .200g for a 6 ring. Then I read reports of the recoil small tips weighing .190g. I had a rod I built a few years ago with a recoil that was twisting and needed epoxied

What size would I need for a 4wt, I know they are thicker than normal guides?

I am getting ready to build myself a new 9' 4wt fast action TL Johnson Blank. I have always loved the looks of the agate strippers. I will just need one stripper for a 4wt so will the weight be that much of a factor since it will be low on the rod? or will I hurt performance of the modern blank? Thanks, Bob

I use a CA finish on peppermills that I make which would be similar to a handle. I put thin ca on a paper towel and Immediately apply to a section on the wood spinning around 200-300 rpm then do the next section. I apply 4 to 5 coats letting it dry to the touch in between, then sand with 400 or 600 grit. Lastly high speed buff with tripoli I use a 8" buff. The finish comes out perfect every

Seems opinoins vary here but most still seem to reccomend higher priced blanks just maybe not the highest end. There is not many shops around here for me to test cast rods. And I seem to own more rods then most of my buddies I fish with so it is hard to try theirs. One thing I have learned from my own experience is I like a fast rod with a softer tip. in looking at the data for the quickline 9'4w

I have built on several high end blanks including cts, rx8+, and Gatti. I have built some rods on rx7 blanks and just built a rod for on a freind on a mhx blank. I have loved every rod I made. I can say the the cts affinity x 10' 3wt is my favorite rod I own. Now the question, I want to build a new 9' 4/5wt I am lusting over the new sage one. Why I don't know maybe the sage name maybe the m

Isn't a 5 or 6wt a little light for erie steelies? I just built an 8wt tl johnson blem sl2, it ccs's out to an ern of 7.9 and put single foot recoils for the ice build up for erie. I landed several real nice fish on it last week. I can't Imagine using a 5wt. I do think the recoils are worth it. occasionally you will get some singing but not much. Bob

I have turned lots of cocobolo for pens, peppermils and such. I will take a oil base finish if you wipe it down good with dna. But the best finish is just CA on the lathe sticks great and holds up well. That dark rich look comes back in a few weeks. Bob

Thanks it makes sense. I knew it was not what I would normally call an 8wt more of a 7wt one of the sage bluegill lines at 220 grain head might be the ticket for a longer shooting type line on this rod. Last week the rod handle several nice 8lb steelies from the erie tribs nicely.

Why do most people tell you to go up a wt or 2 when using a shooting head? Bob

I built an 8wt TL. Johnson blank. It cast an 8wt line very nicely. I wanted to make some shooting heads for casting in to the lake for steelies and maybe some stripers in the salt. I had an 8wt outbound it had a 30' head with a weight of 330 grains but it was to heavy. I made some 290grain heads and I thought the were still to heavy. Tonight I tested it and got an ERN of 7.9 and a AA of 70. that

I used a 12, 8 strippers and ran 4 all the way out. I don't think you need to use more than normal I didn't. I taped them on according to a guide chart I found and did the static placement for final placement. I bought mine from Schneiders rod shop and he had some unbraced ceramic tops that match up nice.
