cocobolo and salt water? Help please.

Looking to build a rod for use in salt. Customer wants to use cocobolo and not sure how it will hold up as all I have done is freshwater with this wood. Anyone have some experience with it?
If it does not work I can go with something stabilized instead but would like to honor his first choice if I can.
Thanks much,

Eric

Coating with permagloss or lumiseal should protect it well

Cocobolo has a very high resin content. For that reason you can't just finish it with a top coating (the stuff won't stick nor dry well) unless you use an alcohol bath for several hours.

Because it is so naturally "oily" it tends to hold up better in the outdoors than less oily woods. And, it can simply be buffed to a very high shine. But if it was me, I'd look for a stabilized piece just to ensure there are no surprises over the years.

Thanks Tom. I kinda figured that. Stripping cocobolo down to apply a finish IMHO takes away the reason I use it in the first place not to mention reduces it dark rich look.
I will look to some stabilized walnut instead. Thanks!

They offer some BEAUTIFUL stabilized options at one of the sponsor sights ... [reelseatblanks.com]. I am sure that you client would find one of them to be more than satisfying.

Thank you Jim, I am a frequent customer of Steves and have been for years. Great guy! I have already ordered some walnut as a substitute from Steve.
Thanks

I have turned lots of cocobolo for pens, peppermils and such. I will take a oil base finish if you wipe it down good with dna. But the best finish is just CA on the lathe sticks great and holds up well. That dark rich look comes back in a few weeks.
