I want to build an old school-style 2pce, glass spinning rod to go with an old 9oz Stella 2500. I'm increasingly interested in glass after buying an S glass 8' 5wt EPIC (NZ blank) which is such a pleasure to use, especially under 60'. I'm looking for a similar feel for a spinner, not noodly, self-loading for smooth casting but with a quick (for glass) recovery.
The areas I'm fishing are r

OK thanks for the clarification.
Thanks also for the Rainshadow blank suggestions - I need a 2 pce (I will do some hiking with this rod) which rules these options out. T

Thanks! That NFC PDF is really useful. Did a quick refresher on ERN/AA - numbers confirm that the 702-2 is slightly faster / stiffer than the 842-2. Should be spot on for the intended use.

Hi
Back in the late 90's I built a G.Loomis IMX S842-2 which caught a lot of fish and is still rolling with a friend of mine (almost 20 years on - not bad!). I loved the rod and got all sorts on it but the tip was a little soft for jigs (or maybe it softened a bit over a very hard life) but eventually I moved it along.
I want to recreate the magic and build an up to date replacement with

I'm looking for a blank recommendation (as is or to cut down) for a niche application. I fish a lot out of a kickboat so long rods are not an option. I want to fish 1-3 oz hard lures (wake, glide and DW) on 20lb mono (sometimes braid) into structure, casting sidearm. Tip needs to be slow for accuracy but taperinging into reasonable backbone but not too stiff as with a kickboat you pull fish ou

Thanks guys - I appreciate the input - you've helped narrow things down a bit - I think it's going to be a ULF.

As I have easiest access to St Croix blanks this question relates to which St Croix blank best matches the following requirement. I'm fishing with small dogwalking baits and other tiny topwaters (around 1/8oz mostly) using 5-7lb mono (or 8lb Japanese braid). The game requires super accurate casting (ideal cast lands 1-2" from cover) at reedbeds and bankside cover and the ability to deal wi

I appreciate your responses, thanks guys. Interesting, I didn't think of a popping blank although I built a GL3 842-2 some years ago so I'm familiar with the action. Good call I think, a popping action is probably a pretty good match.
Thanks again.

I've been fishing with a Japanese angler the last little while who specialises in this style. Let me briefly explain the 'minnowing' method. It originated in Japan and is used for trout & salmon in rivers of various sizes. Only minnow plugs are used - long ago they would have been Rapala CD's but in the last 10-15 years they are many purpose-built minnows (some of them handmade and absolut

Thanks Bob, the article is very useful. It sounds a little more complicated than I had hoped!

Hi
I posted a little while ago asking for input on blanks - to which I had a great response - thanks!
I have now decided what model - Lamiglass XMG50 LSJ700. The snag is I need it to be a 2- or 3-piece. My plan is to buy 2 blanks and use one for ferruling. Following the rule of thumb that ferrule wall thickness needs to be 2x blank wall, I plan to make double-wall ferrules using the scra

Thanks Guys, really useful input. I guess I am now leaning toward the Spin Jig format (my original inclination). I think Ted, Matt and Spencer's comments w.r.t. the butt strength/backbone are relevant for the fishing I am doing. I have been using a S842-2 IMX a lot recently and the slowish taper is irritating when fishing slackline lures (jigs/grubs), I feel as if I am a little out of touch wi

Hi
This is my first post on this really excellent forum. I build rods for my own use and want to benfit form all the experience represented here in sofar as my next project is concerned. I am wanting to build a maximum 6' rod for some kickboat fishing I will be doing. I say 6' as anyone who has fished off a kick boat or similar will know it is awkward to cast accurately and do active retrie
