As I have easiest access to St Croix blanks this question relates to which St Croix blank best matches the following requirement. I'm fishing with small dogwalking baits and other tiny topwaters (around 1/8oz mostly) using 5-7lb mono (or 8lb Japanese braid). The game requires super accurate casting (ideal cast lands 1-2" from cover) at reedbeds and bankside cover and the ability to deal with cichlids running 1-3lb fish (some bass bycatch as well). I don't need to pull fish away from the cover as I'm fishing from a kickboat and can reverse whilst holding the reel spool or go in and fetch fish if I have to.
The rods design priorities are as follows: 1. Accurate casting of 1/16th - 3/16th lures 2. Fine / slightly flexible tip for good dogwalking action 3. Some butt strength but rod must absorb shock well - the cichlids are very strong over short distances (stiff rod = hook pulls or bent trebles) so medium rather than fast action 4. Max. 6' - seems accuracy is better and handling easier on kickboats I am using a SJR6400 GL2 which is OK but the tip is thick and unresponsive and taper is quite abrupt (unsurprising given it's designed to throw crappie jigs). I also built and subsequently sold an IMX SJR6400 - definitely too stiff for the application. I'm looking at the following blanks: 5S60ULF2-G - concern here is the 'noodle' problem - is it too soft? 5S66LF-G - looks spot on but too long - maybe trim butt 3-4"? 5S60MLF-G - Is it OK for casting 1/16th (assume Ti single foots or micros used on top 1/3rd)? 4S60LF - looks perfect 3S60LF - looks good I'd value your thoughts on this - any other St Croix blank suggestions? Thanks Rolfe rcdeppe@mweb.co.za Re: Tiny topwaters

Another possibility for your list ... 3S63MLXF. I have NO idea about your exact needs, but I do know that this is a fine blank for accurate casting with small lures. Re: Tiny topwaters

Rolfe,
The 3S60ULF has a lot of butt strength almost as much as the 3S60LF with a lighter tip for casting the smaller sizes. Eugene Moore Re: Tiny topwaters

Thanks guys - I appreciate the input - you've helped narrow things down a bit - I think it's going to be a ULF. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
