Using a standard fighting butt, I chipped the cork fighting butt away to reveal the approx 2" long steel shaft underneath. To this shaft, I attached a piece of scrap blank approx 6" long as shown in the sketch.

Using inspiration from the Daiwa Japan market rods, and Carbon weave tubing, came up with this design. Not a cold weather rod, but unique and lightweight. On an SCIII with Titan guides.

Hi all, I've been out of touch with rodbuilding for a while and thought I'd check in with you regarding the status of Canadian Suppliers. When I left, Richard was in the beginning phase of trying to recover from a fire. I was hoping to see him back by now.
Has anyone heard from Richard (Richard's Rod and Reel) lately? I was told by another rodbuilder that St. Croix told him that Richard's w

I've had excellent dealings with Rich. If he is hard to get a hold of, Mudhole has been a good back up for me.

I've used the big aluminum coloured winding checks from Merrick/Summer Moon and they are super nice, great quality checks. Very unique but a bit pricey.

Yes, at walmart it is really hit and miss. What they have one day is gone the next. Their product line must turn over very quickly. When I see some that I like I usually buy them all because I know next time they will not be there. I stay away from the junky ones.

Hi Rich,
I have only soldered a few of them. The ones that I did solder were sterling silver and I used your basic lead free solder. Once I soldered the ring, I filed down the solder and polished it, the end result was a barely noticable solder line. Many of the rings found in Walmart are plated or made of cheap white metal, I try to find ones that are made of silver.

I've wrapped a couple sets of Titan spinning guides and I love them. I see no reason to use anything else at the moment. They are light, attractive and above all affordable! The pre-ground feet were not perfect, but I prep the feet of all guides prior to wrapping so this made no difference to me whatsoever.
Wrapped up on a 3S66MLF2 and a Vetre seat assembly, they built into a very light an

I second the St. Croix 4-10lb models. The SCIII and SCII are both excellent, with the SCII being a great economically priced blank that has 95% of the performance of the SCIII. They are my most used spinning rods, and are versatile to go after pike and trout as well.

I second that. I just ordered some of the painted reelseats and coloured winding checks and Linda was extremely helpful. Great transaction.

Thanks Mick.
Bill, normally the ECS is sized to the blank diameter as you mention, but in the case of the Fuji Painted seats, they are all 15mm i.d. (to minimize sizes that they have to paint) therefore they must be mounted on the 15mm o.d. graphite tube. Many of the unique Japanese rods like Megabass are done like this. The whole handle assembly is mounted on the graphite tube, then the tub

Hi Bill, yes you are partially right. The reel seat is mounted to the tube, but the seat is an ECS with blank exposure so the tube will be exposed, plus I will be doing a split rear grip so the tube will be seen there also. Lastly, I might show the tube in front of the seat also, not sure about that though.

Hi Gerry, yes I figure that if the dye can't penetrate the graphite from the inside of the tube, then it will not penetrate the clearcoat on the outside. I'm hoping that the inside of the tube has some "open grain" in the carbon weave that will allow the dye to penetrate and show through to the outside. Wishful thinking maybe.
I am a Permagloss rookie. I've never used it and just

Hi all,
I am building a rod using the Fuji red painted reel seat which requires the use of a 15mm graphite tube to mount it on. I want this tube which is basic grey woven graphite, to match the reelseat and GL3 mahogany blank. I read about Dying woven graphite with RIT. My question is does RIT penetrate from the inside so that the colour is permanent, or is the colour only on the outside su

I just ordered a Mustang inflatable suspender, that inflates automatically when immersed. I didn't see the SOSpenders in Canada. I never used to wear a life jacket while fishing or canoeing due to the bulkiness. Now with the inflatable suspenders and belts available, there is no excuse not to be safe.

During our annual walleye fishing weekend with the guys, we were all reminded how quickly a fun weekend can turn tragic. On our first day of fishing, we passed a gentleman in a flat back canoe with an electric trolling motor on the back. He was happy, waved to us and contently fishing away. We had seen him three or more times throughout the morning, but sadly, the last time we saw him was lying

If I recall correctly, Joe at American Tackle was aware of the problem and said they were correcting this issue in future shipments. I just spent the weekend fishing hard with two rods built using the Titan spinning guides and Vetre handles. Both are outstanding products and have become my favorites.

The St. Croix SCII 2S66MF2 is a very sturdy blank with plenty of backbone. For my tastes it was too stiff for bass, but many anglers like this feel.

Hi all,
I have a customer that wants the Fuji Matte Candy Red painted reelseat shown in the Merrick catalog. Does anyone know what the availablity is like on these and if they are offered in all the sizes for exposed blank. I have an email in to Merrick, but haven't heard back. Just wondering if anyone here has persued these seats.

23. Re: Spin/Fly Rod
Hi Raymond,
I use ceramis guides on mostly all of the fly rods I build. I also use standard ceramic tip tops, and the line flows through them just fine. On my spinning rods, I use the smallest guides possible out to the tip, much like on a fly rod. There is very little difference between a #5 ceramic fly guide and a #5 single foot spinnng guide. The only difference really is the butt guide

24. Re: Spin/Fly Rod
I've built them like this and so far it has worked well for both endeavors. The guides are essentially set up as a spinning rod. This rod is 4 piece. It looks a bit quirky as a spinning rod with the long foregrip, but does the job. As a fly rod, it operates exactly as a dedicated fly rod and feels the same in hand.

Depends on the reel. Depends on the seat. I find that Shimano 1000 series reels have thinner feet than a comparable Daiwa. It's best to check the fit before you bu

I use Stan's technique exactly, a and so far no crushed blanks. You would really need to be applying some unnecessary force to crush the blank, it should slide to position relatively easily once properly reamed.

You could also try a 5wt, 4 piece 8'6" fly blank and drop the butt section. I have a St.Croix SCII 4pc. and have contemplated doing the same thing. The fact that you want to make it combo rod supports this even more.

Mark S. asked:
"I have actually found the 6'6" forecast to be a cannon. Are you using a 2 or 3 weight line?"
Mine is actually the Rainshadow 662, RX7. I tried a DT2F but preferred a DT3F for the shorter distances. I found it nice and performed well at distances that I would fish with a short 2wt, but recall having difficulty reaching out to some up and downstream targets.
