The GM and Ford "peelers" you see are from the 1980's to the mid 90's. It wasn't the clear coat used, but the application by the manufacturers. There is a induction period between basecoat and clearcoat where the clear will etch itself to the basecoat. The problem was the manufacturers originally were waiting to long between the application of the basecoat and the clearcoat. So the clea

We use HVLP guns in my body shop for spraying. HVLP is HIGH VOLUME- low pressure. A small air compressor will not supply the volume of air needed for the gun to spray properly. It does operate on low pressure, but a lot of volume is needed. HVLP's use different air fittings and special regulators to work properly. The gun pictured is a siphon feed cup. It will have a harder time picking up thick

Tom, does Kryptonite have any effect on you??? Just curious. This is really some great news. I was extremely impressed with the show this year. (my first) Everything was so organized and ran so smooth. To think its going to be better is mind boggling. Smart move for the fly fishing show wanting to tag along. Being in the antique business as well as my body shop I'm constantly at shows, seminars

I have used the Forecast guides on my last several builds. Robert turned me on to them. After several trips to the outer banks I have had no troubles with corrosion or failures on my personal rods and the customers that have rods with them love them. HAGO! Joe

It was definately an excellent show. I, like most others spent a wad. Sure was fun though. LOL! Ended up buying a flocking gun with an extra can and several flocking kits, a weaver, some blanks and other rod building goodies and a powerwrapper/ lathe. My F-150 4X4 Lariat was loaded with more than just options when I left. It was flat full. LOL! Met alot of great people. It is cool putting faces w

I own a body shop and do flame jobs and graphics. Regular masking tape will give you a slightly fuzzy edge. You need to get some 3M ( blue) or Tesa fine line tape. It comes in different widths. Get it at any automotive paint store. If your paint is thick you may need to use a exacto knife or razor blade to separate the edges. If it is not real thick like the paint we use you will get a clean line

I own a body shop, I use tack rags everytime on rods just as a precaution. I only use automotive grade tack rags though. You can purchase them wherever they sell automotive paints. Try to get the ones for basecoat / clearcoat systems. When using just gently pat the rod with the cloth. Do not wipe the rod. Also unfold the tack rag and loosely ball it into a bundle. When finished put it back in the

You can use sinkers to balance it, figure out how much weight you need then epoxy them in the butt so they dont slide up and down the blank. There are some companies that make a butt cap that comes with disc. Add how ever many it takes to get the balance you want then epoxy the disc in the butt cap then install the butt cap. HAGO! Joe

I have an order to build a 12 ft surf rod. The customer wants it done in Pittsburgh Steelers colors ( black and gold ). He also wants a team logo on the rod. 1st question is does this break any copyright laws? Second, if not what would be the easiest way to do this. Only needing a single logo it doesn't seem like a decal would be cost effective with set up fees. Any suggestions are greatly apprec

This doesn't pertain to what I did but what happened. A few weeks ago I was trying to finish up a 8 ft Lamiglas to throw spoons and jigs with before my fall trip to the outer banks. Well it was Sunday and the Talladega race was on, it being one of my favorite races to watch I moved my dryer from my rod shop onto the dining room table so i could apply the finish and still see the race. After I fin

As a tournament bass fisherman I have several spinning rods used for lighter lures and skipping. Most of my 6'6" and 7' have 10 inch cork rear grips. They dont get in the way at all. I believe it is a pretty standard practice. At least in my area.

30. Payment
I would like to know how some of you handle payments on rods. I have been building for a while. But lately with a ever expanding customer base I am getting alot of orders in from people I do not know anything about at all that saw a rod somewhere or was referred. Do you ever get stuck with a custom? And do you get deposits from people you dont know? I build alot of surf rods and some of the blan
