How do you get clean paint line edges?

I've seen some fully painted Fuji NPS type reel seats but I would like to just paint the front section on this seat. I would like to mask off the channel underneath where the reel's foot goes and then around the smaller rear threaded section. I've used masking tape before on other projects but wound up with ragged ugly paint lines.
I've seen how they mask off gas tanks and put flame patterns on them on the Orange County Chopper's tv show but can't figure out how they get such smooth lines. I read once where after the tape is in place, a coat of clear lacquer along the edges makes for a clean edge but I've never tried it. Anyone have any good ideas? Thanks. Don't use masking tape. Auto stores will sell pin stripe tape or use vinyl tape. Re: How do you get clean paint line edges?

I own a body shop and do flame jobs and graphics. Regular masking tape will give you a slightly fuzzy edge. You need to get some 3M ( blue) or Tesa fine line tape. It comes in different widths. Get it at any automotive paint store. If your paint is thick you may need to use a exacto knife or razor blade to separate the edges. If it is not real thick like the paint we use you will get a clean line with just pulling the tape. Be sure the paint is almost dry to all the way dry before untaping. If it is to wet you will get small strings or a fuzzy edge. Always pull the tape back across itself either in line or away from the paint. That way if the paint wants to lift off the tape you wont peel it off of the reel seat. Then when dry just trim with a blade. Also when pulling the tape keep it as close as you can to the reel seat. Dont lift straight up. Pull it back at a sharp angle. This allows the tape to cut the paint edge. This will give you a sharp, crisp edge. Practice on an old reel seat first. You shouldn't have any problems. Hope this helps.

Pin striping tape and don't load the paint on, it will what is called " bridge " over the tape and you will have to cut off.
As little color as possible, dust coats, just to cover. Pull tape off carfully and when the design is all done, final coat of clear will cover all edges. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
