The design threads were once tightly packed. Somehow in the finishing process I managed to dislocate many and didn't recognize it right away.

This rod was build for a fishing friend who is a Duke grad, thus the Blue Devil weave on the split rear grip. Being a Carolina guy myself, I had to work in some Carolina Blue in the butt wrap to get suitable ACC balance on the rod.
This is a lightweight surf rod built for use with a Shimano Stradic 4000 reel.

Handle was built of 1/4 inch basswood, cut cross-grained with a hole saw and glued up. The grain was spiralled during glue-up using about a 3/8th inch grain advance on succesive rings. Reel seat was turned from afzelia burl wood which has been stabilized. A Jet VS mini lathe was used to turn the wood.

22. Tool Rest
A tool rest is sometimes helpful for "fine-tuning" cork edges, etc. Mounts on the same base as before.

A steady rest is something I've found useful. It attached to the same base as the previous tools.

The actual support was made from a piece of credit card. The aluminum rod was center drilled & tapped for the retaining screw.

This view shows the bottom of thread carrier attached to a section of the wrapper base. The Green material is "Fun Faom" craft material from WalMart, and is for anti-skid purposes.
The rear portion of thread carrier is attached by two spring-tensioned cams. The cams keep the carrier secured to wrapper body & permits top removel and repositioning of carrier.

This view shows the thread path. The tensioner was made from the outter coil of an old lawn mower throttle cable. The various "pig-tails" were cut from a spring using a Dremel & heavy cut-off disk.

The nylon bolts are no longer used to center the blanks. Three rubber bands work well for self-centering. Haven't gotten around to using shorter nylon bolts or trimming these shorter.
