In my experience, If you have a 5/6 wt. rod I always used a 7 wt line. I was always told from old timers that you should go 1 wt higher than you rod is rated for.

When I was at Gudebrod and then Wel-Tec, Everything was Made in the USA. Who knows where they are getting them now. I don't think the Wel tec owner knows the actual specs of the threads since he was just a salesman. It's not easy to copy the thread if you have someone who knows how to analyse things. But I can say it will not be the same quality. Gudebrod did not cut corners on materials.

The owner of Wel-tec, which was the last manufacturer of Gudebrod thread, works for Texas Thread. Gudebrod closed in 2010 and all remaining stock went to Wel-tech and was then sold off when they went under. I do not think that any new thread will be of the same quality as the Gudebrod pre 2010.

Ed, All of these #'s were special dye batches made for a certain customer or transferred over from their silk thread color charts as trials. As for all of the charts that were left, they were tossed when Wel-Tec closed down. All Gudebrod history books and old cat's were tossed as well. They were left in cabinets when the contents of Wel-Tec was @#$%& off. I don't remember seeing them when

Gudebrod never made 777. I worked their from 1984 until they closed in 2010 and for Wel-Tec after that and don't remember that being a color we had. 777 seems more like it would have been a finish coating for rod building.

This is called trimer. It happens in the dyeing process when the product has not been washed out correctly after the dye has been applied.

The Fenwick color that Gudebrod offered originally was #541. It is slightly lighter the the #5274 that Gudebrod had. Check out Fishhawk threads in the sponsor section. If I remember correctly, They were using #'s that were close to Gudebrod colors.

You might want to try Ed Gamble. He bought most of the thread from Wel-tec/Gudebrod after they closed in January. There was certain colors of 00 in stock.

Wayne, Since I worked for Gudebrod until they closed and kept in touch with some people, I have spoken with the few employees from Wel-tec/Gudebrod. As of the beginning of January, They were locked out and were not able to get in touch with the owners either. As far as they know, they are closed for good. They are not able to access the building to retrieve any property or stocked goods. If I

What is the best way to install a foam handle? What can I use as a lubricant to slide the grip on that will not affect the foam itself?

Check out different color charts from suppliers listed on the side. The colors will vary from manufacturer and also from dye lot to dye lot. Any finish that you put on will also darken the color slightly.

Dennis, Size B thread is not a common size thread. The only problem is that it was not widely used in rod building. When Gudebrod was in full swing, we did make size B for other thread applications and when customers asked for a thread size a hair bigger in diameter and a little stronger, size B was the answer. There were only a few builders/manufacturers that used size B in bulk and it didn'

Hey Mike, The bottles that I had grabbed on my way out was the Milky kind. The colorless was discontinued at least 3 years, if not more, before the closure of Gudebrod. Brad

Willie, It is the same stuff. I worked for Gudebrod for 26 years as production manager (up until they closed the doors). There is an off shoot company of Gudebrod producing the threads now. This is to the same standards as Gudebrod had in the past. Brad
