Went with the ncp green and the effect that it creates is nothing short of awesome. I am waiting for the first coat to cure over the over wrap and I can't stop looking at it. It is also a lot simpler to perform than a lot of other eye grabbing decorative wraps. I dare say I may use this on a few saltwater fly rods from now on. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the help guys. The guides seem to have worked out perfectly. The reel is a shimano baitrunner 6500 (sold in Australia). I may have been able to use a 30 for the 1st guide as well. The trouble I had is I specialise in fly rods with the odd smaller spin rod. This was a special request by my brother for a holiday and I had to have it done inside of 5 days. He didn't really have a

Hi Guy, Does this sound right to you? The blank is a 10' tommy farmer ccp 1-4ounce. I used the guide reduction system where you make use of the choker guide for the first time. The reduction guides are BSVLG 40,25,16 then the choker. The guide spacing seems perfect and I ended up with 9 guides. I did away with the 30 and 20 which I would have had in the old guide train as they seemed like e

I know there has been quite a bit on this topic before but I couldn't quite find an answer when I searched. Should I go with NCP thread or nylon and colour preserver. The under wrap is black and white and the over wrap is either going to be a dark "winston green" or a a lighter green. Thanks guys.

Hi guys, Can anyone tell me what colour thread colour the rpl+ used. I have to replace some guides on a rod that can't get a warranty. I just need the main thread not trims.

I just built a 5 weight two piece MHX (from mudhole) which would be perfect for your needs. It actually performs flawlessly with a straight 6 weight line on it. My mate threw 96ft (measured to the end of the line) with it the other day. I can consistently throw 80 plus but more importantly it performs well in close as well and set up with that line would be great for dries. The line used weighs 1

Hi Guys I have always turned my grips on a mandrel and have glued the cork with PVA. I have never had a grip separate following the normal protocols for PVA and timber. I have then secured it using epoxy to the blank. I have set up my lathe to turn on the blank and obviously have to secure the rings with epoxy to the blank. I'd like to use it to secure the rings to each other as well but know

Hi Guys, I bought the 7/16 threaded backlash mandrel from mudhole. I believe it is designed by Tom. Today I drilled out some timber blanks with a 7/16 bit and when I went to slide the blanks onto the mandrel they wouldn't slide one. They are just a tiny bit to tight. I checked the mandrel with calipers and it is spot on what it says it is so I am presuming the bit isn't the 7/16 it says it i

Thanks Ken, I am in Canberra. That said though I'm more than happy to buy several and pay for a courier across the nullabor if the price is right. In fact I may be interested in other stock that they have to clear.

Hi Guys, My brother has asked me to build him a 10 foot rod for fishing off the rocks. He is going to be throwing mostly 2 ounce or 65 gram metal lures (give or take an ounce). He is insistent on a graphite blank even though I have told him of the pitfalls and I need to keep the components under $170 total (I am not charging him for the labor). What would be a suitable blank for the job? I

x2 on the fiberglass. Loads better at short range, will throw longer if need be and the quality of blanks available these days is outstanding. Offers advantages of bamboo without the maintenance and are extremely durable. I am also one of those anglers Terry is talking about who has gone from graphite back to glass. I just finished a CTS 8' 4# three piece for myself and it is awesome. B

The problems with replacement have been in Australia. One of the people who approached me is a g loomis dealer so I'm sure he has investigated the replacements. I'm not sure why we have been having this problem here.

Hi Guys, I have been approached by several guys over the last couple of months looking for replacement tip sections for their GLX fly rods. For whatever reason they can't get them replaced. I was wondering if there was a source for these or in the most likely case there isn't, are there any blank manufacturers that may have similar tip sections available that can substitute. I'm sure I'm not t

Hi Guys, How long should I leave threadmaster between the final coat and actually fishing it. It is the standard threadmaster. I haven't had this problem in the past as I normally put the rod away for a week. Thanks Ben

Hi Guys, I am having trouble finding the size and colour fly guide I want for the tip top on a build. It is a Batson rx8 6 weight with the soul purpose of throwing long casts. I am using pac bay single foots in the tich or black colour and have found the small loop guide to be a bit small and the large to be a bit large so I was thinking of going with a single foot size 3 guide. Can it be done

I just rebuilt the first fly rod I built a while ago. I put a beadhead through the tip a month ago. This rod has been my go to lake rod as it is 10 foot and although a medium action can consistantly throw 70+ foot casts all day. (It's funny to watch my mates who are avid members of the Sage brigade cast it for the first time. They end up in a @#$%& of a mess as they wave it back and fourth as qui

Hi Guys, I have an RX8 6 weight blank. Its purpose is to bomb long casts out (70 feet to a full line) consistently. What I was wondering was: is it worth my while going to the single foot recoils over the standard single foot chrome plated? Will I notice a difference? I have noticed a significant difference in rods with the double foot guides of each type but I am not sure whether the way the

Many thanks for the feedback guys. I rejigged the guides and moved the first guide up to 4.25. The taper is unusual on this blank in that it is a little thicker than you would expect in the tip (4.5) but the rod is quite light. I have a spare tip in case anyway. I went to wrap it and after inspecting the first guide, found that my spool of gudebrod chestnut thread was fuzzy. It is a shame as it

Hi Guys, I am currently building an 8'6" 4weight (will probably handle a 5 as well) on a 36t/40t graphite blank with a medium fast (very responsive) action. I have placed the first guide, which is a single footer, 5 inches from the tip. I know that a lot of companies and builders like to place it 4 inches from the tip. Is the extra inch going to make a big difference to the strength of th
