small electrical heat shrink you buy at home depot or lowes. very small diameters fit nicely on small blanks with micro guides. i cut little pieces of the tube and keep them in a drawer on my bench, when i do small/micro guides, i slide a small piece of shrink down the blank and put the guide foot under. done. no knot tying, no glue, etc. IMO the easiest way to do it.

Does anyone know if you can purchase the adjustable balance weight that comes in the butt section of the Ballistic factory built rods? Have someone looking for this in a surf rod and likes the style on the Ballistics that you can unscrew and put in your pocket and add weights too.
I looked at the CRB weighted butt cap on MH, looks like weights are on the outside versus the inside of the bla

I have to agree with Billy. regardless of fishing or rod building itself, i like seeing kids involved.
Brandon - im glad the two of you stopped by the Rod Father booth. when the rod is done please send me a picture.

the easiest thing that i found that works the best for me is heat shrink tubing that you would use on electrical wires. you can buy a pack of very small tubing at home depot or lowes with very small diameter. cut very small peices and you can slide it down the blank. put it over the guide foot and slide it into place. holds it very well and will come off easily with a razor.

i know how to do it myself and plan too, was wondering if any builders on here had built one and used or made up their own spacing.

Just picked up a Batson SU1209 from the Rod Father bait and tackle shop in Hampton, VA. I can't seem to find much info on it, anyone have good guide spacing's for it? i'm not sure if i want to go casting or spinning so i will take both.
This shop had a big selection of parts and components and blanks, glad to find a place near me that has good prices!
the blank is 10' and rated 5-12 bu

i agree with the first several responses. I am a big surf angler, pretty much all i do.
if the customer is throwing bait: for a long distance, whether pier or sand, you want the customer to "practice cast" couple dozen times and see what he/she likes. im 6'3" and like a long handle, my heavers are 31 or 32 inches to center of the reel seat. i got a buddy that is considerab

i built the SW1087 for plugging for stripers and love it. ive caught some big fish on this rod and it will throw small baits as well as big baits. i know its not the 967 but i would think being in the same line it would work for what you want it too do. i used the NGC and Fuji K Guides and it casts amazing.

i have looked at the northfork site and do not see anything comparable to the G-Loomis Pro Blue PBR963S. Does anyone know of a blank that is similar?

i mainly surf fish from the MD/VA/NC beaches. if your looking to throw bunker or "8 and bait" i recommend 12' and something rated to at least 8oz. i have several heavers that are rated to 6oz, including a Batson 1418 and Tommy Farmer CCP 13' (rated 2-6oz), i love that rod but most of the time i need to throw 8 oz. The Farmer blank that is rated 6-10oz is a good, light blank that can

i put the shrink directly on top of the blank, i let it hang off the bottom end about an inch and while its hot tuck it into the bottom of the blank, once it cools it holds that end in place. the top end by the real seat i put 1/2 inch of thread to secure it.
if you want to give it some different look/feel, you can put tape or string underneath of it, to give it more of a grippy feel to it.

thanks all for the replies. i like the way the blank feels a lot. does anyone have any experience with his 13ft 6-10oz? i may get that next to add to my collection of heavers for the beach. Mr. Farmer did mention at the show that there is a bigger 13footer in the works, i am curious to see how that one feels....

Picked up one of the Tommy Farmer blanks recently, the 11ft 2-5oz, really like the wy it feels, super light, cant wait to build it. I met Tommy Farmer and got to see the rest if his rods at the show in richmond. I see mudhole carries the blanks, i was wondering if any body else has had any experience with them?

20. Re: Surf Rod
I have two 1509's and love both of them. I had two built for a friend that surf fishes Assateague Island all summer, with 6 oz he was able to throw 196 and 203 yards in a field. All these rods are built with Forecast BUDLG guides and are built conventional. they have caught everything from Stripers, Red and Black Drum to 9 1/2 foot sand tiger sharks off the beach.
I plan on building anoth

I second the Batson recommendation. specifically the 1509. its two piece, 30/70 split, 12' 6" rated to 12oz. all around great heaver, perfect for throwing 8 and bait at the point.
