Believe it or not, my comments are always good natured. Perhaps not always wise. I'm only human. I've been afraid to look at the responses to this for weeks, but too proud to delete it in edit. I sincerely hope that when I meet some of you someday, you don't prejudge me by the goofy or misinformed ramblings I hunt and peck out on this keyboard. I am more than these black and white boxes portray.

Tom, sorry this is the first post after, what, a couple years? And after you went out of your way to fix my email/password/name problems so I could post again. And please don't take this too seriously, but... After all those issues of rods i dont build and techniques I lack the equipment for I finally get a teaser about carbon fiber grips which look awesome (except for the seam on that contoure

Joe, he has never fly fished in his life. Yes, I told him about watching other people on the stream who had obviously never handled a fly rod before. I did advise him to learn to cast a few ways, or at least get used to the reel and rod, and be able to pull out line, and do something with it, before he took the trip. It,s a one time deal, the rod will go in a corner, or maybe on a rack in his ho

I am waiting for my first issue. I don't know what is usually covered, but I hope it contains some info on rod spines! I can't have enough articles and features about that most important aspect of rodmaking ,that of the much maligned rod spine! LOL! Levi

I need a smith machine, and a jewelers lathe, and an anodizing setup (I know how) and a ti coating setup ( I will learn soon). I havent seen anyones work except on the photo page. So, I just want to be as good as I can be, and maybe someday people will want to be as good as me at something. Out of all the posts I read, Putter seems like a real, nice, down to earth real human being. It would b

Holy cow. I recognize alot of those who responded, from other posts, and different places around the web. Thanks guys. I think I will look at the dan craft blanks, I was thinking of the small, sorta teardrop shaped fixed fighting butt, I really like the idea of the two handle sections. Thats cool, I wonder if the guy who wrote that post sells reel seats? Stan Grace, so I should avoid the re

I can fly fish. My dad taught me when I was a little kid. I bought a cheapo rod and plastic(ugh) reel, and I don't know the names of the casts, but I can still get line out there, and do some like rolls, and make the fly sorta jump around. Looks like a 5 weight, I definitely want to put on a fighting butt. I think he's talking about colorado? and he was talking about wind. I know He's been the

A friend of mine plans on going out west to fish for trout. (I picture the green river, seen by me only in magazines.) If (and thats a big if) I decide to build him a fly rod, what weight is recommended? How many peices? Guides? Fighting butt or no? Teach me all fly rod lore in a few paragraphs, in other words. Levi

It does not work. If simple magnets themselves could be harnessed to spin a shaft, there would be no nuclear or gas power plants. It can work with electromagnetism, with the field attracting to pull, then shutting off and another used to push. You would need an external ring of electromagnets, timed by phase, and an armature on the shaft to be effected upon. Sortof like an electric motor. Ro

I'm just a hobbyist, but... If your wrapper can be adjusted for tension, I mean the rod can be sortof locked in place, and you have a decent tension on your thread spool, you can hang a clothespin on the thread, and walk away and never worry, just get back to it whenever. Or really, anything that has just a little weight. Hang something between the rod and the spool. If your setup is way diff

Yeah, but Darrin Heim will go out and pick stuff up and put a digital caliper to parts, and e-mail you back the results, and give you information you have to have to build a rod, and fit it to a reel. Pay fuji for that. Levi

Cool. I have done alot of things, rodbuilding is the best hobby I have ever had, I actually get to use what I make. And it's cheaper, (and less painfull) than fast cars, bikes, and women. A rod wrapper for sure, I don't have a power wrapper, but I have a manufactured hand wrapper. I made my own at first, if you do that, make it tall, and a make a seperate v-block or two so you can make any lengt

Yeah, The larger spinning guides are a pain. But , just like guide spacing, I bet alot of builders like to grind a different way. I am not a professional rod builder, by the way. So take anything I say with a grain of salt. If you look at like a size 30 guide foot, that is pre ground from the factory, you can see where they removed material in like a cone. At the rear of the foot. If you are h

I don't fly fish. Period. I have never heard of Winston rods. But I have no doubt that the men in question loved building bamboo fly rods. They took pride in their work, and their status as craftsmen. They left for a reason. If I were a flyfisherman, I would stop buying Winston fly rods. Sounds like they lost their heart and soul. I build my own rods, cause I can make something with me in it, It

Never thought about it. I just built a rainforest RT 6320. I think its 20#'s, and 63 inches long. I got a Cabo pt on it, ran the drag all the way down till it was hand tight, (tight now, no more clicks.) and picked up a 10 pound weight. Oh, 20# braid line. The rod made all sorts of crunchy noises as the wraps stretched, or the epoxy microcracked, or something. Got the weight off the ground,

I cant do any of that stuff, unless my guides are already wrapped on the blank, the rod I just finished is a 5 1/2 foot trolling rod, set up for spinning, a tip and 3 guides. I used big rings to avoid any realy wackie angles. It's 6:30 here, I was just outside casting it in the dark, I managed to catch a rapala crankbait on the phone line over the street, but it cast great. Good balance, not too

I wrapped my first rod by hand, taping the rings on, holding the blank between my legs, and turning the spool of thread around the blank. Over, and over, and over. Just snug, so the rings wiggle with a good side push. A guy still uses that rod, he loves it. (I hate it). Levi

Hmph. Except for a few equations floating around, seems to me everyone is saying "well, the lure flies out there, and when I pick up some weight the rod looks like its bending, and the rings are'nt ripping off, so lets go with that. I mean, I just think there has to be more to it? You can't just copy a factory rod, the blanks may not be the same at all, I know! Thats why I am looking fo

I usually wash my hands, but I work with so many chemicals I am sure I cant get them really clean without sanding. My hands and arms ALWAYS look dirty. I am using gudebrod cp thread, black and grey on the rod I am about to screw up. I have my underwraps on, and that is where the problems arose, at the very end of the wraps, where the epoxy is in a solid ring on the blank. I am using high build

Ok. Oh, yeah, hi everyone. Here we go. I am thinking of going to glass or ceramic bowls for mixing epoxy, and a glass stir stick. Heat in basement, cured. Humidity, cured. Bubbles, cured. Craters and fisheyes in wrap finish, still present. If Tom would refrain from editing out my cursing, you would read what a west pac sailor can say when the situation warrents. Now, do you think this wou

Power? Hand? Length of rod? Personal preferance as to wheels or felt V's? (I find the wheels will gather grit, and mark the blank.) Max size of rings you will be using? Some won't take a 50 ring, you'll start to turn and "click" you will be done turning. More info on rods and whatnot. Levi

If you just want something to do on cold winter nights ( I sympathize, by the way) go for it. if you got the parts, and just want to build rods for the experience or something. I am in no way familiar with the above sight. I buy calstar, and gloomis, and some forecast, and I been pretty satisfied with the price. I mean, you just dont get something for nothing. If you make something you love, o
