There is a rod building shop in the Pittsburgh area that has been in business for a number of years now that might be able to help you?

From my previous life as a carpet installer I recommend Personna Carpet blades. I once knelt on one and the Doctor asked me between stitches what I cut myself with. He said his scalpel wasn't that sharp. Yes they are double edge.

Bob's answer will probably sound better than mine but I always thought it was to protect the reel from getting banged around. Especially when standing a rod up.

What happened to the guide spacing chart, the CCS ratings and the winding check size for your MHX blanks??

Thanks for bring these to my attention. I don't know if they are new or if it was just an oversight on my part. I along with Jay have been using the Minima guides and like them. My only problem with them is that the ID of the ring is only 3.2mm. Good for a light weight rod. Just a thought.

Unfortunately I don't have a scale to weight items that small. Was hoping someone out there would be able to give me some insight, but thanks anyway Bill.

11. Fly Tip-Tops
I have been building rods for 10 years now. 99% of these are fly rods in the 2 to 5 weight class. The stripper and tamer guides I have come to prefer are the Pacific Bay Minima 4's. As for runners- single foot Recoils. For a tip-top I have been using a Fuji Alconite CFAT. As you can see I am worried about weight, so my question is: Do you guys think the tip-top is to heavy and if so what would yo

I remember reading on this forum a post from a guy that went to Alaska constantly for the salmon run. He said that the only fly rod blank he would take was a 9' 10 wt. Forecast (now Rainshadow) by Batson. His reasoning was that he broke a lot of rods up there but the Forecast keep on ticking. Just a thought.

Matt you have never stated what type of fishing you are going to do with this switchrod.? If you are going to use this rod for steelhead in the winter (witch is very common) then I would say go with Recoil snakes. They are a lot easier to remove ice!

Mud Hole blanks F763XF-3-MHX and F864XF-4-MHX are not listed on their CCS Data Chart. I am hoping someone out there can help me. I have talked to a Mud Hole Rep. a number of time over the past year + and no luck. Not upset with them, just looking for some help. Tkx in advance.

St. Croix makes one in their SC111 series. I have built on an older one and it is a very nice blank.

17. Re: Why?
I Build rods for myself,my three boys and a few chosen friends. Like Ken it was originally to save money but I found that my desire for the best components soon out weighted any huge savings. Now it is just seeing the pleasure in ones eye when they are fishing with a rod that is designed just for them. It"s like tying flies. It's nice to catch a fish on something you created!

I am getting ready to order the components for a 5 weight fly rod. For the stripper guide I have decided to go with a high frame #12 Minima 4 as Tom suggest in a previous post. The customer wants a tamer guide on this rod. I prefer going with a one size smaller single foot guide for the tamer. My question is: do I use a Minima 4 high frame also or a standard Minima 4 fly guide? Or better yet will

H&H has some nice blanks but a 2wt. might be to difficult for him to feel it load. What ever blank you decide on,unless you know the CCS, it would be a good idea to go with a higher weight line. JMTC.

24. Winston Green
A number of years ago the Winston Rod Company used to make one of the prettiest (graphite) rods on the market maybe some of you other older gentlemen remember them. Their color was refered to as Winston Green in my area. Does anyone out there know what thread was used?

26. For Tom
I just read and article that you wrote in the March/April 1999 issue of Rodmaker Magazine on placing a second stripper guide 4 inches closer to the tip-top than the first stripper guide on fly rods. On this site that guide is refered to as a tamer guide. I have been doing this for a few years now and like the results. My question is that in the article you use the same size tamer guide as the 1st

Bill IMHO I have only run into that in heavier weight rods.

Thanks Mike. Like I said this rod is rated as a 2wt. but really throws a 3wt. line better for the streams here in Pa. I agree also about the minama's all the way but my buddy likes recoils. And you can't go wrong with them either.

That as one of the many things that I have learned from this site but I think the most important is to obtain a rifle effect in the guides as soon as possible.
