Excellent point William It is How I would prefer to do things. I am just gathering information from people that do this all the time. I only build once every 3-4 years.

I Know Bob personally and have one of his fine rods. Great guy but I am looking at the possibility of using fiberglass for this rod.

Hello forum it has been a while since I posted. I have a couple questions. I am in the process of information gathering. At this point it is strictly information so as when I do make my next rod I have all the right things in place to make a functional flyrod. Where I live and fish there are a couple smaller rivers that my spey rods are too long for. I used to fish these places until I hurt my sh

Go with Meiser for sure. You just don't put a blank in the cart he talks to you and asks a lot of questions about where and how you intend to fish the blank he then recommends the right blank and line for your situation. Bob also stands behind what he sells best buy on spey gear just for the service.

Right on so I am looking for the oz a rod can cast not the line weight listed on the rod ?

Thanks. Yes it is a lot to cast. I looked back on a very old floppy " remember them any way" Fenwick 1264 is one of the blanks I used to use. It does not have to be a Fenwick just looking for a modern equivalent or better. A particular brand of blank is not too important in this build Fenwick is what used to be easily available in the area I live. Now we have to send for everything no

I am wanting to build a bar style casting rod for fishing Chinook on the Skeena system. I talked with Andy Snedden and he recommended a surf rod blank to build the rod I want to build. Here is how bar fishing is done on the Skeena river. We drive a piece of ready rod into the bar and have attached a piece of PVC pipe for a rod holder. That part is fairly standard here is where we my slightly diff

I posted questions before Christmas about building my handle. Thanks to many here I have my handle almost done. One individual in particular sent me some rubberized cork material all the way from Florida thanks Herb. My brother did the lathe work on the Yew wood did a beautiful job on the Celtic Knot.
I tried the double full wells but thought the shaping made the top end look overbalanced

15. Re: using wood
Thanks every one. I will keep an update as the build progresses.I drew out my handle last evening it totals 26.5 inches including the reel seat. I am using a down locking seat embedded into the back handle. The back handle is six inches the top is sixteen and a half inches. I tried several handle configurations out at a couple of fishing supply stores before deciding and this was what I felt was

My plan is for five wood rings the rest cork. Where the real seat meets at each end and the but cap and a finial and a divider ring centred in the top handle.

No salt water for this rod. Thank you for your help. I will keep the sections short. The blank I am building is a Sage 9150-4 IIIe this is my first build on this type of rod. I also have never cast these rods so I am relying on other peoples experience.

18. using wood
My question is to the use of wood in handles. When placing a wood spacer in the centre of the grip should a cork spacer be used to allow movement or will sizing the hole to the blank size be ok and not cause a weak spot in the blank?

21. Re: Spey handle
The ones I have seen are level after the well is made for the entire length. I am looking more for a double like putting two full wells together end to end. Do you think that doing that would actually work measure a full wells for a single and then make two and put them together?

22. Spey handle
Hi I am new here but have been doing a lot of reading of the topics on the site. It is an excellent resource for sure. I am going to build my first spey blank. It is a Sage 9150-4. I have a piece of Pacific Yew I have had in the basement for a few years and plan to turn top and bottom finials and a couple of spacers. I have some very nice flor grade cork for the rest. I am looking for some lay ou
