using wood

My question is to the use of wood in handles. When placing a wood spacer in the centre of the grip should a cork spacer be used to allow movement or will sizing the hole to the blank size be ok and not cause a weak spot in the blank?

It depends depend how far into the grip the blank flexes and how long the wood ring is.
If the ring is, say, 1/2" long then no prob. If the blank does not flex into the wood area then also no prob. If the blank will flex into the wood area and the wood is very long then you may develop a "hard-spot".
Also, you will get a lot of arguments against it here, but the wood should be stabilized - especially if rod to be used in the salt. See "stabilization specialists, Int'l.

No salt water for this rod. Thank you for your help. I will keep the sections short. The blank I am building is a Sage 9150-4 IIIe this is my first build on this type of rod. I also have never cast these rods so I am relying on other peoples experience.

Robert,
Remember, if weight is of any concern to you, that Wood is much much heavier than cork of the same lenght. Just take that consideration into your rod design.

My plan is for five wood rings the rest cork. Where the real seat meets at each end and the but cap and a finial and a divider ring centred in the top handle.

Robert, with the handle design your considering, wood trim as you indicate will be no concern. I build only fly rods and many have all wood grips or those with wood trim and it has never been an issue or problem. The amount of flex into the grip area of most fly rods is very minimal.

Robert,
If that blank is what I think it is (spey) - it will definitely flex well into the grip. As long as the ring is not too long, as I said, you should be O.K. But it really should be stabilized. A lot of work is going into it and the stabilized wood looks so good and lasts forever.

It is a Spey blank and depending on what line is used it will for sure flex to the cork. I use a Sage 7141-4 and with a 550gn and 12ft tips it flexs all the way to the reelseat.
Keep them small and it will not be an issue. WIth a 15' rod a little wood is nice on the handle as it helps keep the tip up on the swing. I have found that using wood lowers keeps me in a lighter reel. I use mostly Hardys but still need to lead wrap the spool sometimes to get a better balance if it is all cork.

I saw you also posted about handle lengh. A good rule is 5-6" lower and 1" per foot of rod length for the upper grip. Diamiter is to suit the user.

Best of luck that is a nice stick!

Thanks every one. I will keep an update as the build progresses.I drew out my handle last evening it totals 26.5 inches including the reel seat. I am using a down locking seat embedded into the back handle. The back handle is six inches the top is sixteen and a half inches. I tried several handle configurations out at a couple of fishing supply stores before deciding and this was what I felt was comfortable for the casting stroke. I am still waiting for my cork to arrive. Can not wait to start.

Eric,
That is a good formula for the grip(s).
