Hey Buzz - I had a call for one of these recently too. They were asking to have a noodle rod blank built in to one I think. A blank with a handle and no guides, and possibly a tip top?

Keep it simple - that's all I can handle!

I think it could easily be done as the casting isn't as demanding as on a regular fly rod. There is no line "shooting" to speak of, although it's more than just "dappling."

I've handled a genuine Tenkari brand rod and while nice, I see nothing unique about it other than its ability to break down into so many pieces.

Thanks much Marc and Tom. So really we have a custom graphite rod to duplicate the old fashion "Cane pole" but with the option of using a small section of fly line for, as Tom put it "dappling" . So the only question is how many pieces and how long depending on what they want.

Tenkari did a good job of making the rod trim and sport very short pieces without adding undue weight. The bottom line is, how many pieces can your customer deal with? It gets tough if he needs more rather than less.

A Tenkara rod is NOT like the "old fashioned Cane Pole!" They are much more flexible and lighter. The telescoping feature of it is one of the benefits! As it allows one to fish any length in a given situation as well as the ease of transporting.

I too have had the chance to handle a genuine Tenkara and I reflect Tom’s impression of it. I even went as far as calling the manufacturer when I first heard of them but at the time they wanted nothing to do with custom rod makers. To be completely honest it is a very trim cousin of the "bream buster” with a much more tasteful look and a nice cork grip.

So is bite detection done by watching the tip or a reaction in the line (fly line or mono)?

If the angler is using a drag free drift presentation, then most likely it comes down to watching the line or a drift indicator.

Tenkara is mostly fished dry fly, so detection is visual. I have used it dry/dropper, so again watching the dry.

I haven't had a chance to build a Tenkara rod yet. The blemished blanks are cheap.

Had an opportunity to try over this past weekend.
Fishing is close, so observation of the fly itself is the preferred technique.
Roll cast the short line and observe the nymph or wet fly sink in the water column.
Tight line control to match the fly depth to the fish. Set the hook when he takes the fly.
Very productive. The problem comes with rather large fish since you have very little distance to play him.
The other problem is the rod is pointed away from the fish when he is played to hand.
The tip portion of the blank flexes almost to 180 degrees in the tip 3 feet of rod.
Very specialized taper requirements to allow a rod to flex that far without damage.
Surprising light feeling blank for the length. Good fun and easy to learn.

Really simple build. for less than half the price.
