Taking "dent" out of cork grip

I just pulled a rod off the dryer and much to my dismay I noticed that the my chuck left some dents where I'd wrapped a small rubber band on to prevent slippage in the chuck. Are there any tricks for removing this? It's the rear grip on a split grip so it's be hard to sand.

Steam from hot water in a tea kettle type might help
next time don't put the end cap on till the rod is completely done and put a piece of scrap blank into the rod and hold it there when finishing

Nate,
Next time, put a few wraps of blue tape on the rod. (The tape helps to protect the grip from denting. Also, the blue tape has a light tack that will not pull cork out of the grip when removed.

Then, put the rubber band on the grip but don't make the band very tight.

Good luck

Bill - thanks again for the advice on this, I put some water in our tea kettle and let the steam flow right onto the cork as I spun it. It appears it took most of the dent out, I'm going to let it rest a bit and do it one more time.

Roger - thanks for the tip, this is the first time this has happened to me and I'm pretty sure I put the band on too tight. I'll definitely use the blue tape next time.
