As far as grip size and length the first consideration as always is the size of the person's hand that will be using the rod. someone with long fingers will want a different size grip than someone with small hands and short fingers or someone with fat hands and stubby fingers. I think one of the greatest benefits of a custom made fly rod is matching the grip size (length, diameter, and shape) to the hand size and grip of the user rather than matching the grip to the weight of the first thirty feet of fly line or accepting discomfort as the price of style.
