If you'll do a search here on the forum, you'll find dozens and dozens of previous threads related to that topic. It certainly can be and is done, but there are some things you have to be aware of if you want really good results.

Yes, you can and there is a tutorial that explains how to achieve this with an ink jet printer. Keep in mind that ink jets and lasers will not print silver or gold colors like a more expensive label printer can print. You get these results on an ink jet by creating a label with a black background (or one that matches your blank color) and a clear text font. Underwrap the label area with silver or gold metallic, then apply the label. You'll need a photo editing software package like photoshop or Corel, a can of workable fixative and an ink jet printer.

I just buy my labels from Decal Connection. They work quickly and I always get great service.

I do a lot of decals on an inkjet printer with good results. However, there is no doubt that professionally made decals are better (no limitations on color, metallic, likely more durable inks, better contrast on clear decals). The only disadvantage that I see to them is that there is a setup charge so that small quantities get very expensive. If I were doing a company logo that I would use many times I would have them done professionally. Since I am a hobby builder with specific decals wanted for each build, I do them myself and work around the disadvantages.
