Fell in the Cumberland River a couple of weeks back lost my 4 piece flyrod. A kind sole fished it out of the river next day and mailed it to me about a week later with two of the ferrules stuck (the one nearest the tip and the one nearest the butt). Would welcome any suggestions on how to separate the pieces.

If that doesn't work, try wrapping a bag of ice around the ferrules and trying it after about 10 minutes. It's been my experience that cold tends to work better than heat, but that depends upon what's got it sticking.

Back-in-the-days of my youth stuck ferrules were quite common.
Here is the classic method of opening them.
Grasp the rod one each side of the stuck ferrule Behind Your Back
Position the rod across your butt.
Squat as if you were going to sit down.
This will put equal outward pressure on each section pulling the ferrule apart.

Use a thin piece of rubber, latex, silicone in each hand, the type sold for removing the lids from jars. Wrap around the blank both above and below the ferrule and then twist and pull at the same time. That should do the trick.

I was visiting Col Chaseling yesterday and he got a delivery of blanks while i was there and some were a 4 piece blank.They were quite tight and i didnt
dare twist them to much to get them apart.Be interesting to see what method he used,I love the idea of a 4 piece travel blank.

No steam! Like Tom says, ice. It contracts the material of the female ferrule which makes the inner diameter larger. AND, no chance of heat damaging the rod.

A good grip and a solid twist and pull got all them apart. Failing that it was out with the ice and possibly make a couple of the tools featured in a recent issue of Rodmaker. Should make a couple of them anyway as they will be handy.

Hold on here!! A few issues back showed how to make ferrules, so wah la just use a hack saw problem solved!!

when all else fails yse VICEGrip need 2 people one hols rod so it don't move use a table an rubber grip put the vice grio on the rod tighten up to a point it is not on the small part but won't go over the large part them push / pull with all your might , then RAP the vice grip with a hammer the sudden jolt will normaly seperate the 2 parts , when you do hit the vice grip it is at the time max force is applied to the 2 sections
if afraid to do it use some washers [need 2 ] cut slot cut in the washers just so it fits over the small part of rod then put the second one on rotate 90 /180 deg an put vice grip on not as tight as before, the washers
have to be hand maide to just fit tight on the rod , an do as directed above more work but it works well the sudden rap under force works great

With all due respect, doesn't sound like there is much difference between the hack saw solution and the vice grip solution. If you haven't tried ice, you haven't tried the best solution, and it has NO chance of damaging anything. What could be better?

Is ti possible to use bleach or hydrogen peroxide as a lube or wicking agent without harming the blank.
The viscosity is quite low and a simgle drop at the ferrule would be drawn into the connection.
If there is mold or algea congealed the connection could be "glued" and the caustic used as an disinfectant.
My problem has always been the rod seperating when not desired.

don't use bleach or peroxide, just use the twist and pull method and if that doesn't work try ice and then twist and pull.

I would try using ice and getting the ferrule cold the seat in a chair and put the rod behind your legs and reach your arms around the out side of your legs. Then try spreading your legs apart as you pull on the rod.
