Here is a question for all you wood turners.
I am refinishing and vintage boat rod to be sold at an upcoming Rotary Charity event. I am not going old school with the wraps and have decided to some metallic underwraps w/ black overwrap and use epoxy to finish as opposed to heavy thread and varnish. With that in mind how would you finish the wood rear grip? all sugestions welcome. Thank you to all who respond. [www.rodbuilding.org] J Scott Englewood, Fl Edited 1 time(s). Tru-oil is simple and tough to beat. Permagloss is an excellent wood finish, but requires a little more skill.

Standard thread coating epoxy makes an excellent finish. Re: What is the best wood grip finish?

I am a Tru-Oil fan, use it almost exclusively. Personally do not like thread wrap epoxy as most stay too soft and will mar and scratch. Re: What is the best wood grip finish?

Ralph O'Quinn made the absolute best gun stock finish. I think he made this finish before he ever started to make rod finishes. I have used it on bamboo, walnut, oak, and many other woods. I might be worth your time to give Trondak a call and see if they still make it. Re: What is the best wood grip finish?

I've not found a better varnish than this: [www.jamestowndistributors.com]
Contains no linseed oil - linseed oil in marine environments = mold. Tung oil does not support mold growth. Can't understand why any rodbuilder would subject a potentially mold sensitive client to a linseed oil based finish on their new custom rod. Heck, use this knowledge as a sales pitch! I used to use thinned thread epoxy, but I now use PermaGloss on all grips.
I have used CA, as well, but prefer the PG. Chris Re: What is the best wood grip finish?

I agree with Phil E. Epoxy is too soft for grips...I just stick with Tru-oil and have not had a problem so far.
