Recently my buddy and I loaded some line on a loomis 10-6 mooching salmon rod, we were surprised to see the line touching the blank in many areas when a little weight was applied....
I was under the impression this was bad, is it not much of a concern? Re: casting rod-line touching the blank

If it's doesn't go below the blank then it may not be cause for concern. You never retrieve line when the rod is flexed - you pull the fish to you with the rod and recover slack line with the reel as you move the rod back down. Thus, you're not pulling line across the rod.
It is possible to have too few guides. Not sure what you're looking at so it's hard to say. ......... Re: casting rod-line touching the blank

Thanks Tom! I was more worried about long runs from a big salmon while the rod is flexed, if it would heat up the line and cause potential for breakage..., any thoughts there? its up on the tip, probably the first three or four spaces in between guides it touches... I am guessing it is not a problem based on how many fish have been landed on these rods.... Re: casting rod-line touching the blank

It depends on a lot of things - it's not likely the line or the rod is going to "heat up" to any extent that will cause a problem.
On a rod of that length in a casting configuration, you'd want 11 to 13 guides. If it has that many, you're likely to be okay. ..................... Re: casting rod-line touching the blank

Any thng the line rubs against will cause friction and slow it down

Jared,
If you are worrying about the line rubbing the blank on long runs with the salmon - turn the rod upside down when it makes its runs. Then the lines will be away from the rod, rather than towards the rod. Be safe Roger Re: casting rod-line touching the blank

I think you would also be suprised at how many factory rods share this. Expensive ones too. Re: casting rod-line touching the blank
