No more than 10 + the tip top for a casting rod, and around 8 + the tip top for spinning. .

I have 9 on each of those blanks. I am not sure what you are going to use your 812 for but I use mine for chatterbaits and LOVE IT!!!!

Larry,
Duane is right and the person that told you 14 + the tip is right. The best way to find out for those particular blanks is to do a static test and place the micros on a temp basis. When I first started building I use to follow what everyone else did but the fact is all blanks are different and the only true way to find out how many guides you need is to static test for your self. Larry the correct number of micro guides for a seven foot casting rod will not exceed ll guides.
I suggest you take a look at previous posts on this forum dealing with line touch and the number of guides.on a rod. [rodbuilding.org] There are many other threads on this forum covering this subject matter completely. Do a search on this forum and enter "line touch" in the subject matter field and change the dates to all. I would be interested to see the written discourse authored by the advocate proposing to use 14 guides on any seven foot blank. I would welcome the opportunity to reply in this open forum. i want to thank all of you for the info, the guy that told me 14 also stressed the importance of using titanium guides , but to be fair to him i did say i wanted to build this rod as light as possible . guess i left myself open for that one .
at least now i know where to come for real useful information . actually i reread his post and it was 14 counting the tip, but that still seems excessive to me Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/17/2011 06:22PM by larry pilgrim. Re: micro's

Larry,
with 14 there is NO way that it will be the lightest possible build... Listen closely to what Steve and the Swampland crew have to share!!! They will not steer you wrong. Tom Re: micro's

WIth working with Bill Stevens and using that Castaway 8 foot 964 XP3 blank for a crankbait rod, the most guides I have had on rod was 11 plus the tip. That has become my go to crankbait blank. Re: micro's

I have found the easy way to prevent line slap with micros with a conventional setup is to use a spiral wrap. JMHO C2 Re: micro's

John M Hernandez is very correct !
I have built 5 Salmon rods with these guides Best way is to static test in various positions (Tom K's library right up) with the real and line intended for use. I use a general rule, for every foot of rod One guide plus tip top. Then add an extra rubber band holder in the runner section of the rod just in case. If not and it looks good then I am set to go! Your gonna find your self moving your runner guides around a bit and then you may find your self taking a guide off or putting one on. You cant go wrong with a static test following Toms K's right up on guide static placement. This is just my preferred method thus far and its worked successfully for me. I Love those micro guides the performance enhancements over all is satisfying my meticulous customers greatly!.
