How small a micro can you use for 14lb mono? Re: Guide size needed for 14lb mono?

Tiny, tiny, tiny. Smaller than you would want to wrap.
Here a graphic illustration done by Mike Harris, it demonstrates the displacement of 50# mono inside a 3mm guide ... [www.rodbuilding.org] Re: Guide size needed for 14lb mono?

I normally move up to a 2.5mm when using mono or floro above 12 lb test
and when going above 30 lb braid once I trained the fingers, 1.5's have not been any harder to wrap then 4mm guides. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/11/2011 11:07PM by Steve Gardner. Re: Guide size needed for 14lb mono?

When using .29 - .36 diameter (typically 10 - 14lb. test) mono/fluoro, you might consider using a minimum ring of 4.5 mm for the tip... when you raise the rod vertically to swing the lure to you, and try to release line to tie your knot or adjust/tune/clean your lure/swivel/hook, a smaller guide ring might pinch the line, making line flow through the tip difficult. I tried some 2.0's on a rod that I use exclusively with 12lb copoly and didn't care for the casting, I ended up going with 2.5's just as Steve has suggested and like it much better.
Steve, I need your fingers to talk with mine!! I was wrapping 2.0's on some MHX s781's and WOW did I have a hard time with em... Combined with the small guides and thin tips of the blanks, I ended up taking a scalpal blade and scraping along the top of the foot so the thread would grab on and that seemed to be the trick for me..... I have got to get a magnifying light so I can see these little guys in the future for sure! Tom Re: Guide size needed for 14lb mono?

Mr. Kaufmann
I have a fine diamond file that I run across the top of the foot sideways. Just enough to scuff the finish which helps the line grab the foot as you wrap up it. Re: Guide size needed for 14lb mono?

How does one "stick these tiny guides to the blank ? I have no trouble wrapping them just "sticking" them in place . Larry Re: Guide size needed for 14lb mono?

I've been using 3" cable ties. Sometimes hot glue when wrapping a guide on as a top. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
