Phillip,
The best long term solution is to always remove the rear grip, slide off the reel seat, reglue the reel seat and or arbor, replace the rear handle. Roger Re: Loose reel seat question

This is a fly rod ??? The seat can be taken off from the butt. If it has a wood insert that has been Tapered to the blank it may be hard. You may have to get a new insert and split the old one to get it off.

I'm not sure what the rod has yet as I've not seen it.
The guy has e-mailed me saying it's an Enigma EMG fly rod with a loose reel seat. If it has a wood insert the job gets a lot tougher I guess. I'm trying to get ahead of the game and work out the best way to get the old seat off as I've heard of using boiling water but not sure the best way to go. Philip Re: Loose reel seat question

If it is already loose, You might be already a head of the game, Use a little pressure and move the seat back and forth this may break it loose and you can slide it off the butt end. Then you can just clean it up re-shim and glue it in place. If it wont break free you have in my opinion 2 choices # 1 cut it off and replace with a new one or drill a couple of holes in the seat and try and force a epoxy bonding agent between the seat and blank. Using boiling water can cause some unseen trouble, if the seat is wood it can cause the wood to swell and loose its luster also heat can damage the blank Good Wraps Bob Re: Loose reel seat question

Boiling water will not hurt the blank itself, but it can negatively effect a wood insert if the seat is placed in the water without protection. I have been very successful in removing fly rod seats by placing the seat in a poly zip lock type bag and submersing it in boiling water to soften the sealant (5 to 10 min.). The bag needs to be large enough so that any opening can be kept above the surface of the water.
It may take one or more attempts to get it off. Re: Loose reel seat question
