Pull Back Loop

For years, I just used to grab a piece of thread off the bench to use as a pull back loop to end wraps. I know there are commercial products out there, but for me, these loops are like golf tees and guitar picks- they vanish as soon as you lose sight of them. I don't need to spend $ for something I lose on a regular basis. I have found that 6 lb. braided fishing line works great for this application when using size A thread. I find that the braid never breaks, and it slides easily under the thread wraps. Also, when it's new, it is fairly stiff and doesn't fall back underneath the wrap. I try to make a habit of putting it on one of the posts on my thread carriage. This re-forms the loop in the end and keeps me from losing it. Re: Pull Back Loop

I have some bright colored yarn in my fly tying desk that I use in making crab flies. I tie a piece to my braid pull loop to keep from losing it. If I drop the loop, I can easily find it. Re: Pull Back Loop

Dental floss treaders for me. They are bright blue so easy to see and they last for a long time. Re: Pull Back Loop

I think if anyone tried this, they would never go back to thread. They work great, cost almost nothing, and last a loooong time. I keep mine on a thread post in the carriage, and never lose it. The one I'm using now has done about 50 rods. You can buy a hundred for something like $0.79. Re: Pull Back Loop

20 lb yellow Power Pro (diameter of 8lb mono). Even though they are yellow I still lose them, drop them I tried tying a bead on but then it slaps against the rod when wrapping under power so I just tie a new one. By the end of one rod they're pretty much "toast" anyway as the loop closes up despite putting it on a vacant post on the thread carriage. Re: Pull Back Loop

I use 10# Fireline (diameter of 4# mono) which lasts for quite a long time. Also I put a small piece of blue painters tape on the end which makes it easier to find. Re: Pull Back Loop

I also use the Yellow 10lb power pro.
I put a pink bead in the end of the loop at the knot. To take care of the bead slapping problem, that is mentioned above, I just pull the loop with the beaded end close to the wraps. If the bead is close to the wraps, no issue wiht slapping. It only took a couple of wraps to get this in hand and have been using it for the last many rods with no issue at all. I imagine that a person could tie a few hundred rods with a braided loop. Tough, long wearing and slippery and easy to pull through the threads. Roger Re: Pull Back Loop

That maybe isn't the floss threaders I'm talking about. I don't have the ability to post a picture at them moment, but a long time ago there was a picture of one on the photo section.
The ones I use are called "Ross Floss Threaders", and available in the dental section of just about any drug store. They are blue monofilament, with one end bent back and fused into a loop. The fact thay it is monofilament makes it stiff, and easier (for me at least) to use. The loop is about 0.75" long initially. As you use it, the loop eventually gets longer and longer, until eventually it breaks. But, I usually get well over 50 rods per threader. I've been using these for many years, dentally, to stick floss under a bridge, so they were the first thing I thought of to pull threads when I started building rods. Re: Pull Back Loop

Good stuff there folks, great ideas. I tried the bead and had the "slap" problem, I'll try it closer to the rod. I also have some glow beads I use for live baiting, I"ll try that and maybe the yarn. I can't believe some of you have had loops for so long. Your shops must be really clean and gremlin free! Thanks for the all the tips...... Re: Pull Back Loop

Rich,
Always hang the "loop" back on the same spot all of the time and it will be with you for a very long time. Roger Re: Pull Back Loop

I agree with Ron Webber, the ones that Backlash Tools sells are the best I have used. I have used about everything I can think of ( except the floss threaders) and Backlash Tools have them all beat , in my opinion. I stock up every year at the Expo.
