glow in the dark thread ???

Do any of you folks see a need for a glow in the dark thread? I thought it might be cool to wind it on the tip of a surf rod. Any thoughts??

Thanks,

Robbie

It might add a cool look for bass fishermen that like to fish at night with a black light as well.

I think it would be a great idea for just that purpose. I've been wrapping tiptops with white on every build for a long time. I do alot of Gulf coast pier fishing and it helps to have something to catch your eye when things get a little crowded at night.

I've played with some of the glow in the dark threads that are available. The ones I've played with don't work well once you cover them with finish (epoxy). The threads are UV activated and finishes intented for rod building contain UV inhibitors to protect the color of the thread. Without finish the threads glow reasonably well for 1/2 hour to an hour.

Sorry Robbie.

I read your post too fast and didn't realize what you were asking! I thought you were looking for a way to get a glow tip on your rods!!!!

I think that would be an interest in the Glow thread if it works well enough

I think Mud Hole used to sell a "solar" thread that was supposed to glow in the dark. Didn't really work for me though.

I think there is a use for it, though, because I've had surf fishermen who asked me for some way to be able to see their rod tips when night fishing. A lot of guys tape light sticks to their rods tips. Sure would be easier if they could just hit the tip thread with a flashlight and charge the thing up every now and then. A lot less weight too.

I experimented w/ plain white thread, not ncp, a few years ago then used a glow in the dark paint (chartuese and bright orange) from the hobby store as "color preserver" then epoxied. Well, it hasn't been in the sun a lot since then since I don't surf fish much any more, but, I had to store my rods in the bedroom for a couple months while I fixed up the rod room. The wife kept complaining about the glowing in the corner. I had to put my glasses on one night to see what she was talking about. That thing Really glowed, every night.

Thanks for all the feedback!! We are thinking of adding a new line of glow in the dark metallic thread. I do not want to add it to our line if it does not glow well due to the epoxy finish or other factors. I will have a few samples at the show if anyone is interested in trying it out. I would certainly appreciate some "real life" feedback. They will be at the FishHawk booth.

Thanks,

Robbie

My experience with nearly all of the existing glow thread I have experimented with is fairly negative. Most are "fuzzy" and as noted they do now glow well when covered with a finish even when being charged with camera flash or hi-intensity flashlight.

I know quite a few serious catfish enthusiasts that would LOVE to get their hands on a thread with a glow life of an hour or so at a time with a green or orange color.

I would love to field test some if you like but I'm unable to attend the ICRBE
this year. Maybe I should just email you and buy a spool. I know a group
of sturgeon fishermen who bank fish at night.

Raymond,

I will send some your way. I am also sending some green to another rodbuilder in CA! The glow in the dark metallic thread will come in blue, green, bright green, yellow, white, and a peachy color. Do you have a color preference? Also, please forward your ship to address to sales@fishhawkthreads.com. I will be interested in your feedback!

Thanks,

Robbie

Way to go Robbie! THANKS

White or Chartruse would probably work better but BLUE
would really be popular if it works well. Email is on the
way.
