Hello Everyone !,
I've decided to try my hand at rod building again after a hiatus of 10+/- years. I'm going to start by finishing the blanks I have on hand. I have a G. Loomis GL3 that I've already glued up a handle on and a few others, including an All-Star and several Fenwicks, some of which are blems. I can't believe I didn't finish the Loomis! What a slacker. I realize I have a great deal of catching up to do. The internet was not much of a factor in rod building in the 1990's and my main mail order concern has retired. (Thanks Dale for years of GREAT service) The list of sponsers on the left here is very impressive, so I don't suppose I'll have trouble finding components or advice. I've got a ton of questions and plan on doing a good deal of research, including reading the posts here. I do have one immediate query though concerning finishes. I need a recommendation for a two part epoxy low to medium build finish. What is a good one and where to get it ? Thanks for your time. Re: New member, old builder

There are many good finishes on the market today. My favorite is ThreadMaster, both the high build and the lite. Flex Coat is still out there as is LS Supreme and some new ones like Diamondite and Aftcoat. Try them and when you find one you like stay with it. Each will have it's own characteristic, though the basic application is pretty much the same for all of them. Good luck and enjoy. Re: New member, old builder

Hello Dennis,
I've settled on Threadmaster for my finish, I like the charactoristics, water clear-ness, and the fast cure time it has. Fishsticks4U on the left is where mine comes from, you wont find better people. DR Re: New member, old builder

Don't feel badly Dennis, I still have a Lamiglass grass blank with the cork handle that needs to be sanded. I started this project in the early 80's and then graphite blanks took over. Re: New member, old builder

After using a lot of different ones (all good in their own way), I've settled on Threadmaster, which, IMO, is the best available Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: New member, old builder

Hi Dennis,
Been there, done that!! I still have three Fenwick BoronX blanks (4, 6, 8 wts) left over from the mid 80's. One of these days I'll get around to building a matched set.. BTW my favorite rod is still an 8'6" 6 wt BoronX that I built in the early 80's. "Go fish" Andy Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
