I want to continue to hone my wrapping and thread finishing skills but I am running out of old rods to practice on. Would wooden dowel rods be an acceptable substitute to an actual rod blank? Just looking for a cheap option.

Great points and questions brought out in the threads below. I wanted to address most if not all but it would take too more time than I have. Instead I thought I would start anew with comments about the system as a whole. I know that many people are wary of marketing mumbo jumbo but I can say we did exhaustive testing on our own to validate any claims, if nothing else but to make sure WE were all

I just built some fly rods using AMTAK's Aluminum Fly seats. Let me just say, I'm very impressed. They had some very cool "modern" designs, while still holding true to the fact they belong on fly rods. The anodizing was flawless, and I love the fact that each nut had it's own "O" ring. My favorites are the Braided ABW12T-B, and the "Triangle" ATW12T-B. On 2- 8wts, th

I'm building a shakey head xsb802.75. It has a Tennessee handle, split grip, and will use fuji guides using the kr theory, 20h, 12h, and 5.5h, 5-6 size 4 fuji micros + Fuji tip top. I have a set of fuji ss alconites, and with the setup using six micros, the guides weigh 7 grams or .20 oz. Since I do not have a set of Titanium guides, would someone weight the same set and post the weight? Is t

I’m looking for a complete American Tackle Black Matrix Vetre Casting Handle system, Model# VH10C-MX-B or the lower trigger reel seat part if anyone happens to have one. I have a request into American Tackle, but I think they have discontinued it. Thought I would try here as well. Thanks!

8. boat rod tip
I have a 30 lb solid tripping rod I am building as a bluefish/striper rod. The tip is 18/64.
Since I only use a short leader with a swivel, I would like to use heavy duty micros, but there is no tip even close to a 4 or 5 ring to fit the rod. Would a guide work as a tip on such a rod?
Thanks to all.

Hi everyone,
This is my first post & I am new to rodbuilding.
I've just rebound a friends surf rod (old mustard
coloured blank, unsure of make/model). I used
Prowrap colorfast - 428 'summer sky' in size "A"
for the underbinding. I noticed a significant colour
change (darkening) when I applied the 1st coat of
finish. Is it common for the colourfast/ncp threads
to darken? I

10. Anglers Resource
I just received an e/mail from Anglers Resource via their newsletter that was a very interesting read about setting up spinning rods with micros (4, 5 & 5.5) . I'm sure that not every one will agree with the concept, but you should give it a chance before you condemn it. I've been using this concept (using M style) for a couple of years and have had great luck with it.

After a six year hiatus from rod building, I'm going to re-do the guides on an old rod. My problem is I have a few BSVHG (Fuji hardaloy I think) guides left from previous building. I'd like to use what I have, but don't have enough to finish the job, and I can't find that guide in the Mudhole Catalog. Is there a guide that would be similar that would work with these old guides? Doesn't need to b

15. Epoxy Finish
Are any of the finishing epoxies more flexible than others? Lately I have been having a problem with my stand up tuna rods that flex quite a bit, this is true using aluminum guides and stamped metal, once you start to flex the rod you can see a crack in the epoxy, customers don't want to see this and neither do I , any suggestions?

I recently finished a rod where i used a light brown thread and gold trim bands. Everything turned out great, but with one problem. After wrapping the guides, the light brown looked great. It wasn't until after i put the finish on it that it darkened, and has a kind of wet look to it. I used an NCR thread so i don't know what happened. If anyone could shed some light on this, it would be of great

You can buy a guide for 50 cents or $50.
Why should a rod builder put a $50 guide on a rod, rather than a 50 cent guide on a rod.
Folks talk about friction, or weight or etc. etc. etc.
But at the end of the day, with the material that todays guides are made from; is there really any advantage to putting the $$$$$$$$ guide on the blank rather than the $guide on the blank?

I am looking for microguides to wrap on my Sage CT blanks. When I look at the microguides offered by various companies I notice that they only come in sizes 3 and 4. I have built a few rods with a 4.5/4 tip top followed by guides in sizes 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 7,8 and 10. These are the TLSG titanium silicon carbide guides made by Fuji. Fuji also has the CLAG concept alconite guides and LSG gunsm

I need a automotive clear single or two part urethane or acrylic I don't care It just has to contain no uv blockers. The reason is I built a rod last year that was uv light reactive, that was until I had it clear coated. I knew it would probably be a problem but I thought I would try it anyways. I want to do another one and find a way to make it work with a quality clear coat. I have already ca

American Tackle NIRLS Typhoon Spin/Cast Guides vs Pacbay DP ( both frames are titanium ) . How tall are the NIRLS guides? They look like the fit between a model T casting guide and a A frame spinning guide . Anyone have experience with these guides.
The guide I choose will be used on a SCV 8wt flyrod that will be used mostly for steelhead and bass fishing by a novice fly fisherman. I

Here is my question. I found an American Classic Diamond 10wt blank i am going to build into a fly rod for fishing the Kenai in AK. It is a "sanded natural" blank. What are the benefits for finishing the whole blank? Its going to be a rod for a friend to use and a back up for my Batson. Just wondering if i should finish it.

So I am finally coming down to the last bit of my Flex Coat High Build Epoxy an can't decide if I want to stick with it or order Flex Coat Light Build or even Thread Master . I have tried ProKote in the past year an like some of it's characteristics but but not all of them to make the full switch. So should I just stick with the High Build or bust out of my shell an get the Light Build or Thread

Just ordered my first Fuji VSSM spinning seats, with both cork and EVA matching fore grips, as this will be built up-locking.
Any tips on assembly? Would you install the fore grip on the seat first and then ream and fit the whole works to the blank, or first the seat then the fore grip. Also, how much do you glue all the edges of the fore grip to the seat?
Thanks,
Marc

Guys, trying to find guides for a repair. Have recently been getting in a few of these rods and am not familiar with a supplier that carries the guides that match. The rods are Shimano Sojourn, the guides are single foot, larger than micro, have more of an angle than fly guides. Any idea who carries these?
Thanks,

So I got this guy that wants me to complete a rod that is wrapped but not complete. I have to coat it and have to turn the cork handle. I am looking for some info on how to do this so far this is my thoughts. First find the pedal for the sewing motor I have to turn the handle with some control. Other alternative is turn it with a cordless drill mounted to a block and set up on my rod wrapping
