Hello everyone,
I'd like to get educated about wrapping tip top guides. In the past, we haven't wrapped them because they were glued on, and I assume that was ok?
But my son wants to wrap the tip top for the rod he is working on now. We have lots of questions about how to do it correctly... but instead of asking them all and many not being necessary, I'd like to hear from the community what

122. Tips for a beginner?
Good morning!
My name is Ryan. I've been interested in building my own fishing rod for awhile now but honestly I have no idea where to start.
I'm a woodturner and I've turner pepper mills, pens, nutcrackers, etc. Now I'd like to build a fishing rod with a turned handle. Penn State Industries at one point sold an entire kit that included a handle and rod blank, the guides, epoxies, thread

The way my brain works, I like to make everything mathematical. But, the more I get into building rods, the more it "feels" like art. I am not talking about decorative wraps, inlays and alike, that is no doubt art. I am talking about picking out the right blank for the right application or fisherman.
Ratings of power depend often on saltwater or freshwater. Action is usually consisten

Hi guys,
So I am completely new to this, like I haven't even purchased a piece of thread yet new to this. I want my first build to be somewhat simple to see if it is actually something I will enjoy, but looking through all the rod blanks online I am unable to find a 42" to 48" med. heavy or heavy blank. I am wanting to do a ice rod build for big fish. Maybe I just need to buy a longer

A question, when I make a pull loop out of braid ?? I use 10 LB, what I found out [ NEW BRAID ] has a packing wax that I remove with a
DNA wash, , don't know if it creates a problem when you apply the epoxy to the wrap ?? I just remove it ,
"' WAX "" don't know what to call it but it looks an feels like wax that you can remove with a finger nail scrape on it ,

126. Why Epoxy?
Nearly everyone I know has had issues with applying epoxy finish at some point, myself included. A thought occurred to me while getting ready to prepare some finish; why do we always seem to use epoxy? When I built my first rods back in the early 70's, we were using Gudebrod solvent based rod varnish. and I still have some of those early attempts. It took several coats to get what you wanted and

I've had a request to make a short jigging rod specifically to target lake trout. The client wants a conventional reel 48" rod using 20 # braid and 10-12# leader. I have no experience building anything this short (other than ice rods) or light (I build mostly salt water rods). I assume I'm going to have to start with a longer rod and cut it down but would really appreciate some suggestion

I've only built a couple of ice rods, I live in AZ and have never been ice fishing. A buddy wants a gift rod for his brother for lake trout thru the ice. He describes what he wants as:
1. 36" or a little longer, no shorter
2. A lot of backbone but some flexibility in the tip
3. 6 to 8 guides, more is better
4. baitcasting reel seat
Any suggestions on a blank? Mudhole has a couple

Trying to figure out what's the lightest tip slow action blank to buy. Not clued in as yet to any specs that might help, either. Since fiberglass is flimsier than graphite, interested in any info on this, too. Thanks.

Hi guys I need some help with guide sizes for an Ultra light rod I am building for a fund raiser for my brothers kids school. I have not built an ultra light rod yet so I need a little advice for the guide sizes to use. I am using a white MHX 6'6" ultra light blank, with spinning guides, I am not providing a real for the rod so I am not sure how big to start and end with. I am planning on u

Hi,
I needed to work on some guides on personal rod that gets roughly treated (grandkids, wading). I noticed I was out of thread wrapping finish, so I went to a local fishing shop. They had head cement lure and jig finish. They said that they used it on spring bobbers for ice fishing rods and it had held up well for them. So I took it home and tried it on the guide wraps. It looks good. I have

I am looking to build an in-line ice fishing rod with and without using a spring bobber.
Does anybody know of any in-line tip tops out there for rod with 4-5.5 rod tips.
Or what can be used?
Or is it not needed.
Thanks, Doug

So I have been reading up on using fly guides on a fiberglass blank and since fly guides and regular guides are not the same size as far as ID. My question is that a fiberglass blank is going to be heavier than a carbon blank as well as less backbone then the carbon blank. Would I be better off with fly guides of a say a 4 or 5 size rather than a 6 or 8 also should I go with a low profile guide r

New to air brushing.. Want to paint some ice blanks. normally I use krylon fusion which is real flexible and doesn't crack. But they don't have all the colors that I need. Do I need to be concerned with paint cracking (there will be a coat of clear coat over it) for ice blanks? Suggestion on make and model and decent company to deal with please.
thanks, Buzz

136. dryer motor
Our microwave died, hee, hee, but the turntable still turns so no worries there. If I salvage the motor and it runs on 21 volts (which seems likely) may I also salvage the stepdown transformer that currently powers it? Haven't had time to rip it apart yet. I'd like it for a spare dryer motor. NO electrical knowledge!

I have friends who are very good fishermen who swears by fiberglass for that special 'something' that catches them more fish with certain techniques.
So I got my first fiberglass rod to test out.
Question for those of you who have built and fished with both extensively: Is there really something about fiberglass (or bamboo?) that provides something that carbon fiber simply can't?

138. fly rod wrapping
Most of my rod building is with bass and crappie rods. Recently, I have been trying fly rods, but the upper sections, by the tip, is too flexible for the jig I am using. With my current setup, there is too much tension on the rod and it bends too much for my comfort. Are there any suggestions out there on how to wrap the upper section of a fly rod?

140. Power wrapper
I've really gotten into ice rods and enjoy building them. Am I crazy to look at a power wrapper to help spin these little rods? I've been kicking it around but is it worth my money and is it beneficial for ice and regular rods? I've been using the crb hand wrapper from mud hole but curious if the power wrapper will be better? I don't want to lose my control I feel I have today.

Im trying to put together an ice rod for someone and they are requesting the "black imitation recoil guides" because they are cheaper than the "real" REC recoil guides. I have no idea what he is talking about and he can't come up with a brand. Any suggestions? Thanks, Buzz

So a while back I had asked on here about ice rod blanks and it was suggested I try Midwest rod and Reel Ice Rod Blanks. At the time I ended up with Thorne Brothers blanks but now I was interested in buying some Midwest. I found the site and didn't find any blanks. I emailed him but it turns out he won't have any this year.
I was interested in his because I've heard multiple people say they

I am trying to wrap wire guides to a ice fishing rod for the first time. I a having trouble with gaps in the thread when I get to the guide that I cant get rid of. As I get closer to the tip the guide is wider than the blanks and I get the gaps. It isn't as noticeable on the other end where the guide and the blank are the same size. I am using size A thread. So do I need to use a bigger size t

148. Ice fishing blanks
I didn't see a lot of threads for ice fishing blanks. I want to build my own ice rods because I could make three or more (depending on the blank) for the same price as buying one ice rod or combo. Of course the great part is being able to choose the types of materials used for guides, thread, the blank itself even. Hoping this will be a friutful hobby for me. I already have been tying my own flie

I would like to build both a spinning and a casting rod for my five Minnesota cousins to use on their yearly walleye fishing trip to Canada. Being a west coast trout, yellowtail and tuna kind of guy, I have no idea which rods are best suited for walleye. It is my understanding they troll to locate the fish and then use jigs (and Lindy rigs?) and crawlers to put fish in the boat. I am not concerne

LET’S TALK SPRING BOBBERS – First off, hate them. Never put them on a rod I don’t have to. Having said that there are instances, such as long-stand-up-hole-hopping rods that you need that visual bite detection from a distance. Lots of options. What do YOU like and why, attach photos please……AND what some some different ways to attach them to the blanks?
See photo of samples, thanks, Buzz
