I have a spinning rod I am building with a cedar handle and fore grip from Archies custom Handles. Would several thin layers of perma gloss work for a finish on the cedar? Thanks.

Just ordered some Bass Khang ice blanks to try out. Seeing as they all come as 36 inch blanks, and I want smaller finished rods, I know I'm going to have to trim them up. My questions are, does anyone have experience with any of these blanks and trimming them? Should I be trimming from both the butt and tip to get the length down? How much can be trimmed off the butt end without significant

Or maybe I should say - how wide/long...... trying to determine where I can stake claim in the house as I get into the hobby, and wanted to get some advice for what is considered the "minimum" width to be working with to reasonably, and ideally efficiently, wrap/finish rods. Assume for sake of argument, that I'd be doing primarily 7-8' rods...... I guess the minimum then i

Been searching and reading through the archives and haven't found this specific topic. I have read info here and there embedded in other posts. Looking for tips on best practices for wrapping the last few, very small guides. My hands are large and it is a PITA sometimes wrapping the last two because only one side of the blank can be supported and it bends down from the tension on my thread. Any h

Do sub freezing temps have any effect on graphite blanks? Like when banks get delivered to my house here in Wisconsin and left outside for hours in temps possibly well below freezing? Any need to be concerned about extreme cold temps?

Have a couple of general questions on types you would suggest. I’m building 2. One for walleye and one for pannies. I’ve seen some use regular guides but otherzs prefer metal. Could you give me some guidance on preferences and sizes you like to use? Thanks for your help! Chuck

Over the years, I have made several different rod stands to use to hold a bunch of fishing rods, that are either being built, or to use as storage when traveling or other rod storage: Basically a piece of wood with a tight fitting hole for pieces of PVC pipe to fit. The pvc pipe size is selected, based on the size of the grips of the rods to be stored. i.e. small pipes for rods w

Hey All, Looking for a bit of input regarding some winding check finishing on one of my first builds. It's an ice fishing rod being built on the MHX CIB-36MH-MHX blank, intended for use as a Lake Trout ice rod. For this rod, I decided to go "all out" with a carbon fiber split handle setup. The grip components I used are as follows, all ordered from Mudhole, listed from the butt forwa

Hi all, I've been lurking here for a short while, gathering plenty of info on the A to Z's of rod building, as I just got a beginner's start-up tool/supply kit and I'm planning on getting my feet wet over the upcoming winter season. So far I have learned a ton, so thanks to all the experienced builders on here, as well as past newbies like myself that have already asked a majority of the quest

What would you say is the best ice rod guides? I'm building a power noodle rod with 0.8mm tip. I will put an inline reel on it so a little taller spinning guide first I'm thinking and then regular guides. The problem I Have is to find suitable tip tops for this small diameter blanks that still have bigger rings..

I am in the process of building a lead core trolling rod on a rainshadow solidglass .385"X.105"X72. I looked on the website and it says the guide spacing website is down to check the blueprint page and that says it's down to check the guide spacing page. I have enough guides to put up to 8 guides plus tip top. Does anyone have the guide spacing for this particular rod?

Hey guys, so im doing 2 rods.. Ive looked into finding the color, dupicolor and DuPont dont have what i need.. I went to the classic car restoration place, and hes going to give me an estimate on monday after he talks to his supplier.. He has to see the smallest amount he can get before he gives me an estimate.. The color is basically mexican pink.. (Trust me, it hurts me too.. But thats what the

For the experts out there, what are you using to write on the blanks? I've tried the Pilot Metallic X-Fine pens that Mudhole sells with pretty disappointing results. Put a layer of epoxy, let it dry, scuffed up the area I wanted to write on, and on the several attempts I've made I decided I was better off just wiping it away.

Hello guys, first post here. Figured this would be the ideal place (hopefully) to ask about maybe buying a premade rod being it’s too close to season to be making my own rod now. I’ve been using and ok with the St Croix 6’3” medium Eyecon and then last spring I was talked into buying which turned out to be a very big letdown/disappointed with a Dobyn 7’ Fury I purchased (terrible single foote

As the subject states.... Can anyone sell me on using these? Ive never built a rod with them.. Ive gone to a store and held a rod with them, i personally prefer cork... If anything, it seems other mediums allow for a significant advantage on customizability.. It seems with winn grips, it is what it is.. And im not a fan of hkw they litter thier logo all over the place.. Can you shape winn? What m

I'm looking for a new/better blank(s) to build a Lake Trout ice rod on. The rod will be used to jig 1/4-3/4 oz baits and catch lakers 5-15 lbs on average with a real chance at 20+ lb fish as well. It will never be used inside a fish house so the finished length will be 5'-6' long. I definitely want a moderate action to keep the fish pinned so that's led me to fiberglass crankbait blanks. I'm

I am going to build a couple sturgeon rods (spinning) for ice fishing with the rainshadow solid glass blank. The rods will be 42" or 48" I haven't decided yet, they will have 20" handles from butt cap to tip of fore grip. My question is what would be the best guides to use? I was thinking about using the Forecast VD Spinning Guides (double foot), if I decide to go this route do I

What do you do with a fiberglass rod that has no backbone or very slow action? It is for ice fishing and 36 inches long. I guess I just don't know if sanding down the tip would lighten it up a little and maybe add some backbone or cutting off a couple inches from the tip would do anything. I wanted to use them for walleye and perch dead sticks ice fishing but there just doesn't seem to be enough

I'm going to be building a custom ice rod and know nothing about fishing through ice so I'm wondering about a few things. Which would be a better blank glass or carbon and what effects does the cold have on either? What is a good handle length from center of the reel foot to the end on the butt? What size spinning reels are normally used. Lastly, I'm guessing guides without inserts would be best

Hello all, I am looking for some recommendations on either a Lamiglas or NFC rod blank for steelhead. I fish the Clearwater, Snake, and Salmon river out of Lewiston Idaho. I fish mainly from the bank with bobber and jig or beads. I know I want a 10’ two piece rod. Just don’t know which one. As for the rest of the parts for the rod I’m all ears. This will be my second rod but I’m up for the cha

Many moons ago, there was the the fleaflicker blanks that were solid carbon fiber. Currently, there are quite a number of Japanese rod manufacturers that are making solid carbon fiber blanks. I know of at least where 50% of the blank is solid carbon fiber. There may be another that is making the entrie blank out of carbon fiber. Since I only follow UL rods, I know only of these being made
