I would like to test the durability of 1. a painted ice blank, and 2. the tip section of a painted ice blank which has been painted and clear coated. i want to test this BEFORE the ice fishing season (we won't get ice until November in Wisconsin)/. Nothing bends as much as the tip section of a power noodle blank (you can bend the tip all the way around to touch the blank) so I thought this wou

153. TN handle
I am in the process of starting to build my first rod, a 36" laker ice rod on a batson blank. I never had put any consideration into doing a Tennessee handle until Roger mentioned it in one of my previous threads which got me interested. Wondering what peoples thoughts are on this, or other handle suggestions. Thanks! Also, in some of my reading I been doing it seemed like people will als

Slick! Many dealers don't even know about this thing. If you want one you'll probably have to ask the dealer to get them in stock.

From conversation between some people, ive decided on buying a batson solid glass rod blank for my laker rod and first try at rod building, and I think im going to cut it down to 36" (tentatively). The next step here now is deciding on guides; size, spacing, style, etc. Im sure there are 100's of combinations one could do, and I hope to experiment with that down the road. But for now, id

157. Line slap
I just built two fly rods from the same maker and one rod was fine,no slap. I built the other one and I used Mudholes' guide spacing chart on both rods and got line slap on the second rod. the rod is 8'6" 4wgt. the guides I used are #5 and a boat guide stripper and a large rip top. My reasoning comes from posts and articles online concerning knots and loops that are us

Hello, i have searched and searched and have not been able to find anything that is of much use to me. i hate to add another "guide size..." thread but would really appreciate some help. 1- I would like to use the more modern guide concepts, but i am building this rod as a gift and do not know the exact reel that will be used. I was guessing a #25 stripper to be safe since he will p

Pretty much any relevant thread was 2-6 years old, so I figured I'd ask. Might have better luck on an ice fishing forum obviously... Does anyone make a fair number of ice rods? I'm looking for input on good quality ice blanks. I bought a few MHX blanks to build some ice rods out of, but that's only because my options seemed so few. Are there any other places to buy a good ice rod blank fro

I bought a bunch of cork rings so I can try my hand at making my own grips, however I was wondering how to do a split grip? Mainly, what are the black things on the end of the cork seen in this picture: I noticed most of my rods I own have these on the top of the grip as well, split grip or not.

Hi, Im working on my first 4pc rod which is almost 11' long. I dont have room to place the entire rod in my rotating machine. Any ideas on how to install the top 2 sections of the blank into the machine for applying finish? I have ferrule wraps to contend with. What i did so far was take my smallest reamer and wrap some tape on the end. Insert female ferrule into that and mount to machine. It wor

Hi, I am wanting to get into rod building, not for business just for personal use. I only want to build ice fishing rods. I recently bought a custom rod and love it, just that it was quite spendy and I think I can build them myself and is something I think would make nice gifts for people.I am having trouble finding a lot of places that just carry ice rod blanks. I been searching around trying to

Has anyone used any of these blanks? Kind of pricey for panfish fish but, I like the idea of 7'1" or 7'7" extra fast. Guides? Thinking of using single foot fly guides, treating like an ice fishing rod. Going to use Tennessee carbon fiber handle. Any feedback would be great.

Does anyone know of a specific brand of blank that can be purchased that is made for, or adapted for inline (line runs through blank and out end into a spring bobber) ice fishing rods. Should be 36 to 50". I know I can collect broken fly rod tip sections but I am looking for a blank that can be purchased over and over for multiple rod orders. thanks, Buzz

Hello, I'm thinking of using rec recoil guides strictly for running guides for a spinning rod. I like the idea of lightness and ability to flex for handling midwest winters. My question is, can I use the RSF Light Duty/Freshwater Single Foot Fly Guides or should I use the more traditional spinning rod guide design, RSPG Recoil Micro Guides? Any advantages and disadvantages over one or the othe

I have figured out what the flat plastic material is used to make this spring bobber but I have no idea where the end of it came from. The "spring" actually fits into the bottom of the orange looped end of the spring bobber. I seriously doubt someone manufactured this end just for spring bobbers. But I can't figure out where it came from or originally what it was used for. Anyone know??

Hi Group, I'm building an ice fishing rod for a friend, bought a MudHole kit and all set, but running into a new issue while wrapping the rod guides. (I've built 5 rods so far, so still in the "novice" range and this is my first ice fishing rod). The blank is so flexible that the tension from the thread is pulling the rod out of line on the wrapping mount (basic Pacific Bay unit). T

Here is a finish problem I have not run into before. 17 high school students participated in an ice fishing rod building class recently. In addition to building the rod and wrapping the guides many of the students magic marbled the grips. Of the 18 rods built, 3 had tacky finish. But that isn’t the mystery, only a couple of guide wraps were tacky on these rods. The grips and remaining guides

I want to alter the tip of a rod blank to make it very fast, extremely soft tip. Going to start with solid glass and carbon ice fishing blanks. Anybody have any ideas about doing this. I am thinking about using my power rod wrapper and fine sand paper.

I am looking for advice on an ice fishing rod build. I want to build a 32" walleye rod. what is the best blank to use? I am leaning towards a Thorne Bros. blank. Also, how many guides would you use and what distance should I use for spacing. This is going to be my first build. Thanks in advance for your info.

Does anyone know for sure if Shimano Thunnus 8000 has any angle at all to pinpoint the chokepoint distance? I've been scratching my head on this for awhile and i can't seem to get an accurate answer. I know x27 puts me in average where i should be, but just wondering if there are more accurate measurements for this reel. Any ideas?

I am building 2- 10' 6" spinning rods out of Rainshadow steelhead blanks for light surf fishing. I wrapped a double layer of rubberized cork tape 22" long for the grip and am using a fugi plate typ reel seat that I will wrap in place. This is my first rod build ever and here is where I learned a costly lesson today. I was finishing off the end of the fore grip using heat shrink tubin

I am looking at building a personal rod over the winter. The idea is to build what I would consider to be the ultimate crappie rod. I plan to put a full cork handle on it, full recoil guides with a guide wrapped on the tip vs tip top and very minimalist in style. I would like a 2 piece due to ease of transport and am looking at 7-7'6", although I'm leaning towards 7' and may end up going

I'm just getting into rod building and have built 3 rods so far. I've been struggling to find a 36' medium heavy fiberglass rod blank for ice fishing. I have found 2 on mudhole, but they have orange or yellow tips near the end. I'm tryign to build a rod for a friend as a gift and would prefer to not have the colored tip. Silly? Certainly, but any suggestions would be great as google as not

I am planning my next rod build and need some help with guide selection. First let me describe my fishing situation so you have the full picture - I am an avid crappie fisherman but not in the traditional sense, I live in RI (Not the state you associate with cane poling crappie on a sunny day) my home town lake hold some really nice crappie, but they tend to school and hold in deep water most of

A while back someone on this board recommended ice rods blanks with tips that acted like bobbers and fast at the mid-blank. I can't find the post and I want to purchase a few. I checked my followed topics but can't find it. If anyone can remember who replied to my inquiry, would you please lead me in the right direction? Thanks
