Micro, meaning short. I remember reading a post of a vendor who had/was advertising/ needed input on their line of shorty fly rods. These were, as I recall, 4'6" to around 7' long. I searched the archive and couldnt find anything. Which of the vendors was it that had these? (Im in the mood to elevate an 8" rainbow to the "apparent size and spirit of a three-pounder.") RB

I have been haveing problems with a ghosting affect. I even put a coat of finish down and then apply decal, then after I apply finish you can see a dull affect behind decal. It doesnt do this all the time. I have applied water slide decals on numerous rods and some you can see a dull affect and some are crystal clear.. Anyone else haveing simlar problems?? Thanks Dave's Rods

I am looking for a blank that is like a Quantum Micro. This is a 4'6", lure weight 1/80 to 1/16, line weight 1 - 4 lbs. I can't find one with that low of a lure weight. Also I have yet to build a ultra lite, is there any tricks for puting guides on the top portion, it looks so thin. Thanks for all the help!!!

multiple questions in one....Is it normal to have little bumps in the first coat of finish on the wraps? Almost look like dust or something in the finish. Or are these micro bubbles? Can I sand them out with 600 grit wet paper? will this ruin the 'clear' finish after the second coat is applied? Will this fuzz or whatever happen in the final coat? I build in my office which I thought was a pretty

Hi all, A while back there was some discussion here regarding the 3 wheel buffing/polishing systems as an alternative to using any finish on oily woods such as Cocobolo. I have purchased the system available from Lee Valley here in Canada and I am very impressed with the results. I just finished a Cocobolo casting rod and the finish of the wood is much to my liking. It is not a glossy as Tom

Just wanted to hear some thoughts on the following. Although I don't own any Winston's, I've cast a number and have been very impressed, especially with the LT and WT lines. While I agree with the opinions frequently put forth that St. Croix and, my personal favorite for value, Cabela's make high quality blanks, I often wonder whether I'm missing something about the Winston rods -- the blanks do

Any idea what would cause a "cloudy" or dull finish on my ferrule and guide wraps? I use Flex Coat regular and have never seen this problem. This batch of Flex Coat has made a dozen rods or so with no other issues and the temp is the same as always. Any remedy?

Received my lathe today, impressive turn around since I only ordered it last Thursday, after 1pm even. However, unless I am not setting it up correctly, I'm not totally impressed with some of the workmanship, especially as proud as they are of their unit ($$). Let me state before I go any further that I may be a little nit picking and I know I'm going to love using this lathe, however as an upt

Since the cold weather came last fall ,I'd come into the house to finish my rods so I could count on a stable temp and humidity. Since then I've been struggling with what I thought was micro bubles, mostly seen in the butt wraps. Drives me crazy when I use a lighter and go through all the mixing stages to avoid "them". Once again I went through the same stages but my wraps are dark and

Rod Bond problem – have used the original-intermediate and the final version of rod bond with never a problem today I opened a new quart size container and the resin had the consistency of frozen vanilla ice cream- I know a resin can crystallize but this seems extreme- anyway to safely restore it to it’s normal consistency or is it a total waste John

I read an article in a recent issue of a fishing magazine that talked about older gentlemen overcoming issues that might have kept them from fishing. One older fella had lost some feeling in his hands from a back injury. To help detect strikes, he had a rodbuilder put a graphite ring in the handle in place of a couple cork rings. The graphite of course would transmit any strike sensations to t

I have a request to install a piece of this tape between the top and guide 1 on a surf rod. I have never used it, not sure I have ever even seen it! Has anyone ever installed this tape? If so, please explain your technique and source for the tape. Lola

I purchased a fifty dollar blank grab bag from Merrick and what a great buy for fifty bucks. I got seven Rainshadow blanks all different. I also got a dozen ice fishing blanks that are 13 inches long. I've never seen any thing like those, but certainly don't need them in N. C. I would send them (no cost, freight prepaid) to anyone that would like to have them. The last time I went ice fishin

I would like to try these spinning guides for a personal rod;a super light drop-shot rod.Are these guides made for mono or would a fused line be a better choice?I want to use the maximum # of single foot fly guides for sensetivity and thought these might work well.I will use 4-8 lb. line.

I have a spinner in my stack that is not marked anywhere. It is 5'6", 2 piece, mahogony looking color, black and gold thread and has a tennessee handle. Top section fits over bottom section. It has a VERY small tip, probably in the 3 to 3 1/2 area and VERY fast with good butt. Very light weight and good balance. One of the two true ultra lites I have with such a fast, small, flexible tip

I'm currently finishing my mechanical engineering degree, and have a design class. I was thinking about doing a case study on various guides to test their heat dissipation characteristics and coeffictients of friction. I was just interested if any of you have any experience with this, or if there are any past RodMaker issues that have touched on this issue? I'd appreciate any help on this issue o

I was cleaning up and found almost full bottles of 2 part Gudebrod "Super High Coat", "One Coat" Rod Finish. It has a product no. of 843. It is likely 4 or 5 years old. Part B, (the resin?) is still liquid, but the Part A, (the epoxy?) is thick and paste like. I did use it to repair some guides, so they have been opened, and I do remember both parts were measured with

I'm thinking of assembling a new ultralight spinning rod. I have an ugly stick and a rod I assembled a few years back using a Shakespeare graphite blank. The ugly stick 5'6" is a good rod with the shakespeare blank I assembled a little better in that it is more sensitive and casts slightly farther. Both rods are pretty much limited to 1/16th ounce or greater lure weight. What I'd like t

I'm prepping the guide feet (last night did the 6 single foot alconite fly guides...), and just want confirmation that the "ramp" i'm making is long enough... If the total foot is about 5-6mm, I grinding about 1 mm at the tip of the foot. I tried grinding a shallower ramp, but just couldn't seem to do it with the file and needlenose pliers I used to hold the guide. the tip seems pret

I'm building a rather plain rod, by choice, where above the foregrip I will have only a waterslide decal with a small trim wrap on each side. It's a matte blank that will need a first coat of finish, before the decal goes on, then a second coat on top of that. Which finish or finishes (including possibly combinations) would give me the smoothest, flatest result? I've worked with Flex Coat Lite,

I recently aquired an old, 5-sided bamboo rod that I plan to use as my first bamboo restoration project. I want to replace the guides and wrap the ferrules; otherwise the rod is pretty good. I have a suspicion that it is impregnated, but I am very inexperienced, And don't know for sure. I own a newer model Orvis rod, and the surface of the cane of this old rod compares to it (at least to my ey

I've been doing some searches here because I'm goign to be building rods 3 and 4 in the next month... and one of the things I'd thought I'd try is using an alcohol lamp to head the epoxy to make the bubbles rise to the surface and pop. where are these things sold? and are these different than the butane lighters that are like little blow torches?

Last night I decided to make some new rod turner stands out of the hard white material that is used for kitchen cutting boards. These old cutting boards were high quality very dense white material that I think was polypropylene but not sure. I cut the things into pieces with a skill saw. The saw dust from the board ended up a very light shreaded plastic material that I am toying with using as

I really need some help gentlemen. I was bonding my handle assembly together this morning for a fly rod. I prepared all the surfaces and was set to bond. I opened up the hardener and put some on my tray for mixing, but when I opened up my resin it was not smooth like a paste, but hard and crumbly. It was not opened before as I only received it about a month ago into my stock. Is there any way I c

I would love a 0 weight in that length but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to find one. How about a 1 weight? Does anybody have any experience in building fly rods from spinning blanks? I've heard about the 1/16 = 1 weight, but I just don't buy it. I was at the local Bass Pro checking out the ultralights rated for a 1/16 lure. They definetely don't feel like 1 weight fly rods! Is anybody famil
