Can anyone recommend some blanks well suited for vertically jigging 1 - 3 oz. spoons? I will likely build them up as "bait casters" - to accomodate a baitcasting reel.

Greetings to the Republic of Texas. Thank you, Mary Lou. Sounds cottony twilly to me.

Are there any "rules" for types of materials used in creating rod bags that hold the sections in a rod tube? I am going to have a seamstress make me a few and my choices of materials include Poly / Cotton 70 / 30 to Medium Weight Wool (8 Weight). I like cotton twill, but I wonder if there are issues with using natural fibers versus synthetics.

Thanks for the replies. If you guys are still out there...what I was really asking - should I use a 2.25" or 2.5" tube?

I have started building more rods with size 20 strippers and besides maxing out standard rod bags, they are a very tight fit in the 2.25" rod tubes that have served me so well. (4 piece rods) Does anyone have experience with this issue? Has anyone used 2.50" tubes?

Steve - I am intrigued by your last assertion - that the larger and more strippers will "help line get off the deck faster". Are you saying that you can pick up / throw more line with fewer back casts when you have a 20 - 16 - 12 on an 8 wt for example? Thanks, Tony

Rods being so light these days...I use Exotic Burl to balance out the rod with heavier salt water fly reels like the Ross Big Game. It's beautiful and functional when used in this fashion.

I have to chime in as well because my very limited experience with Richard is such that he works his butt off for you. He takes his job seriously and is very dedicated to serving the craft. Good luck, Richard. Maybe you will have some ThreadMaster4Me? Perhaps ExoticBurl4Me?

The fibers do come off, so hopefully the tape method might work. What about running the wraps through a flame? I also have some fuzzies from the the ends of the threads I cut off.

I am wrapping with Black Gudebrod, holding guides in place with blue painters tape, and the apartment I work in has crappy carpeting. I am seeing some very very tiny fibers on the wraps. I can take them off with my fingers...sometimes. I am not sure if they are coming off the tape or because the thread is running through a tensioning device cranked down too tight or because I burnished the w

Hopefully, Dan is still out there. I have asked him this before, but I was curious if others had any opinion. Is the FTL "not as fast" as the FT, and knowing that it is "lighter", is it a sutiable rod for big game in the 8 weight? I love the FT and I really want to try the FT Light, but I don't fish much below 6 weight and I am all set in the lower weights. As someone

All great ideas, guys. Thanks. One thing for sure - I am getting nylon bolts and nuts or the guide holder from Mudhole. The grinder I did choose is supposed to be variable speed, but there is always a potentiometer, eh?

To all who responded - I know many enjoy the Dremel. I tried it and maybe it's my caffeine habit and lack of a vise, but I kept slipping off the end of the foot and taking down the end. I destroyed one guide by making the foot shorter by almost half. I directly e-mailed someone who had posted a recommendation for variable speed grinder that is only 7" wide, has two wheels, many RPMs

Can someone recommend make and model of a very small grinding wheel for prepping guide feet? I am not high volume and the smaller the better as my workshop is the dining room table in an inner city apartment. Thanks.

Hi, Kent. Please understand, I am no expert, however, I can tell you that companies like Scientific Anglers and Rio (and others) make a line for every application. If you browse their home pages, they do a very good job of explaining what lines are designed for certain situations. For instance, you will find lines with the name "Wind Cutter" - designed for casting through wind; &qu

I was looking through some older posts and saw some statements that the ring material in the H&H stripper guides was Aluminum Oxide, maybe comparable to a Hardloy. Is this still true? Also, does anyone have working experience with these strippers in a salt water environment? Do they hold up well? One last question - I had a Sage rod that had these strippers. The ring fell out. Anyon

Once you decide on your rod weight - make sure you pick the right line. If it's windy, you can get lines that are designed to cut through the wind. For quick casts, instead of worrying so much about fast action rods, you can get line that is designed to load quicker. Just my experience as someone who learned fly fishing on the flats of the Florida.

This past weekend, we pulled out a scale so accurate that the numbers jump up and down when you blow on it. The composite burl rings that we used weighed in at slightly more than 3X natural cork.

Can someone recommend a tool that can put a really straight edge on the bevel of the front end of a cork handle, when turning? I have used sandpaper folded over a popsicle stick and I have used some "standing sticks" that a really nice guy in Louisiana invented - sandpaper glued on hard plastic. However, I am not always happy with the "sharpness" of the edge these approach

If I wanted to replace one or more sections of an RX7+ in the Gloss Chestnut, would I have to try and find a blank / section that matches color exactly? There has been a terrible accident and I can't claim it is a warrany repair unless blanching with alcohol lamps qualifies as "normal usage". Being in manufacturing, I know that each batch of product might come out slightly different

Tom - On that note...I have built an FT 7 weight with H&H snakes, but I would like to build one with single foots. I am trying to decide on wire or "ceramics" - if ceramics includes SIC Alconite, Concept Series. When you say "the right style and size", can you give me any ideas? Thanks, Tony

Thanks to all who responded. Scott is correct and I also will NEVER EVER work with this stuff again. I am committed to finishing this rod and that is it. Definitely file under "Do Not Try This at Home".

I have seen a lot of discussion about using Rayon threads for wraps and it is not good. I am well into building a rod using Rayon thread. It did have some bleeding of colors on some of the larger guides but the wraps on the tips worked out pretty well. In the process of re-doing some of the wraps now and have applied put two solid coats of CP and I'm ready to epoxy. Is this a hopeless cause

Does anyone know where I can find colored burk cork rings (blue, red) in 1 1/2" diameter? I am very aware that Andy Dear offers his exotic burl in this size. I am looking for your basic colored burl. Thanks, Tony

I think I have the same question / issue. If you were building a rod that had wire (hard chrome) single foots and you wanted to use two Snake Brand Agatine strippers, wouldn't you size up the stripper guides so that the inner diameters of the stripper guides were both >= than the running guides? Otherwise you might end up with the inner diameter of first stripper = I.D. of the first runnin

What is the best way to remove one ring from the end of a cork handle and replace it with another ring? I have a handle that I turned and I really like it, but the end section needs to be bigger to accomodate the hood of hte reel seat I want to use. Thanks.
