What size reel are you going to put on it? For my I go with 30's down to 4's fresh water, or 6's for saltwater.

If you're going to use mono and a shock leader you will need to move up to 12mm running guides and tip. Built a 1569 used 16s as running guides I have no problem with 17# mono and 50# shock leader. Just built two CCP 13 3to6 & 12'6" 4to8 oz nice rods used 12s as running guides.

After you put the abalone on the rod , I use a flat cord to wrap tight around the abalone, put some heat on it then remove, any marks will disappear with a coat of epoxy. I like to put a few wraps of A thread in front(not on the abalone) the abalone will stay put and yes I find it easier to put one coat if epoxy on, then wrap. Also note that some glue may push out use a toothpick to remove this

I have been using minima tops on all my own rods for about three years now with zero problems. Now I put them on most rods I build, none have came back so far.

Cameron you need to take a look at the MHX P904-2 I think you will like this rod if your fishing for Spanish, blues, trout from the pier or surf. the rod may not look to be heavy enough but it is . I throw up to 1 oz with mine no problem and if your casting from under the pier it my work for 2oz . I like this rod for just what your talking about. Chris Linville
