May seem like a silly question but has anyone ever tried a wrap with florocarbon? How did the florocarbon react to epoxy?

Steve I'm sure you are going to get several recommendations but, here are my thoughts. If you mean “casting” when you say conventional I would recommend the following. Reduce your first guide to a 16. Set it at the 20-22 inches from the reel. Don’t worry so much about where the line hits the guide just get the guide centered on the rod. The first guide in my opinion simply smoothes o

It's been about four years since I moved from Washington state but when I was there Anglers Workshop had a few of them in the glass case in the front of the store. They may not be in the inventory so ask Dave.

I agree with Steve. I exclusively fish for bass and pride myself as a good worm fisherman, when it’s not lightning. I use a med-heavy fast tip rod. You need something that you can feel that bass pick up the worm but not something so heavy the bass feels the rod first. I guess my opinion is based on the size weight and worm I use most. I have always liked the G Loomis MB783, but since they

Great post!! I also need to draft a warranty policy. I wonder if others having a policy would be willing to post it here, Like Jim. I have generally tried to work with my customers and fix any and all repairs. I have even built a couple of rods for a discounted cost (at cost but the customer did not know it was "cost"). I also tell the customer that if the manufacture replaces the

Anything with a "4" in the last digit of the model number, is going to be to heavy for what he is asking for. I would stay in the "2" to "3" power range depending on manufacture. I have found that most guys like so of the crankbait rods for this application as well.

I find that leaving the lable on overnight prior to coating seems to help. I would try to trim and put a couple of coats over it.

I just always figure $10 per rod. But Tom is 100% correct you could use the "constructure sale price rule". But for me it never comes into play because all of my rods sell for more than $165, which would be the wash point. If you are selling a custom built rod for less than $165 you are working for less than minimum wage.

Ron I just built a musky rod for a client. He absolutely loved the final product. I used Fuji’s CMNAG alconite concept guides. The frame is a little beefier than the CLNAGs which should work well for the musky abuse. It may require an extra guide to get around the blank for the spiral, but the reduced weight of the alconite guides should make up the difference. Not to start a long conversa

Guys thanks so much for the opinions. I will start looking for a used lathe but if I get antsy I only live 2 hours from Grizzly in Springfield, Mo. once again thanks.

Guys I know this is a beaten down topic but I need some opinions. If you had $550.00 to spend on a metal lathe what would your choice be? I have spent several days researching on the web and I think I have narrowed it down to three choices but I want your opinion. Microlux 7X14, Grizzly 7X12 or the Harbor Freights 7X12 If you have either of these let me know your opinion. If you have

Michael I would think you could find the decal you want (size wise) and send it to decal connection or Anglers Workshop. They will make the decal for you. You're not selling the decal you are selling the rod so you should not be infringing on any copy right laws. The customer is requesting it. Just my thoughts but I'm not a lawyer.

Guys I will post more about the incident later. I am very tired, but thankful to be alive and very thankful my son is going to be ok. I thought some of you may see the news story and wonder "do we know him?". This is the link to the news story. So much for the Gloomis IMX MB843 (I think that's what it was I can't remember at this point) Hope to talk more later. Gabe

George you can start with this site. It's a great resource to use when going through options with perspective customers. Then of course you place your order through one of our sponsors to the left. Once in the site go to the catalog tab. Once in the catalog you can either print or zoom to see each item. The link to the main page It may take a little time to download. And

Guys I have a Renzetti lathe permanently mounted on a table. The problem is I constantly have to move my foot pedal as I work my way down the rod. Does anyone have a good picture layout or drawn out plan for a table length foot switch? I noticed a picture Tom posted in his gallery showing his lathe. I can’t make it out but I believe he has a table length foot pedal. I want something n

It's not as bad on the wrist as one would think. If you think about it the wrist is really in the same position. Most guys palm the real anyway. But I agree with the jerk bait comments the short pistol grips work great. I have also built several pistol grip rods for young kids. The idea is they are less appt to let the rod slide through their hands when learning to cast. I came up with a

Walt I use a Renzetti and what works best for me is a two hand method. 1. Bring the thread over the top and around back to you, 2. Pull the thread taught, this should bring the spring arm up to the mid point or so, 3. Work the thread to your starting point making sure it is in a straight line around the rod, 4. With one hand holding the thread tag end use the other hand to grab the thread

Walt these guys are right prep is the key. But to answer your question from another angle. When wrapping with size "A" tread I often intentionally cause a gap in my thread when I get to the edge of the guide foot. In other words as I'm wrapping I use my finger to push the tread up onto the guide foot and continue to wrap for about five turns. At that point I stop and push or pack th

Just cut the wrap on the left side and remove it going the same direction you put it on. If you can't the figure eight works well. As a side note I have replaced the standard drive belt on my renzetti with an O ring, it works great and it's easy to change speeds.

Guys I hate to start wavering off subject here but one issue of under wraps has bugged me. Everyone discusses guide foot prep and I totally agree with not wanting sharp edges etc… But strictly talking a rod set up for casting I don’t think the pressure point would be on the tip/toe of the guide foot anyway. It would stand to reason when compressed the rod would be pulling away (ou

I think you're going to get allot of opinions. I don’t think an under wrap is needed on any freshwater rod. I build allot of freshwater stuff and not too much saltwater, so my opinion may be slanted. I’m currently building a musky rod and the guy specifically ask for an under wrap. When I asked him if he wanted a true under wrap or a decorative under wrap he had no clue what

Christopher Buy a microwave it's way cheeper than getting rid of the wife.... :) But you can also use two coffee cups 1/2 filled with water nuke them for about 1'30" and then set your epoxy in the water for a little bit. This works great for all forms of epoxy, Rod bond, flex coat, treadmaster etc... Just make sure you don't let the water get into the epoxy.

Bobby I would try a St. Croix 2S56MF MED FAST 6-12 1/4-5/8 available at Custom Tackle Supply (or Others I'm Sure). It's St. Croix's SCII so it's affordable. Yes it's on the lighter side but great for spinnerbaits and flukes. I grew up in lower Alabama and fishing the same way. I will tell you once you go with the new style rods, 6’ or better with the longer handles you will like them.

Shawn you can always go directly to the Gudebrod internet site and look at what colors are available. Then order what you find from one of the sponsors. Also for future use ask your dealer of choice for a Gudebrod or Mederia flyer. I have found the manufactures flyer represents the colors fairly close.

Guys I'm building a Musky rod for my pastor and I would like to add a Musky Weave. Any thoughts on a good pattern? I want something other than a straight fish. I would like the pattern, left list and color recomendations if available. If you have one, you can post a link here or direct email me at gbnrodbuiler@yah

Guys this is a cool way of fishing. In fact I thought it was a family secret. I grew up "jigger" fishing and I can tell you it’s not for the weak hearted. We used 20' telescopic rods modified by removing the first two tip sections and replacing them with a something allot stronger (an Ugly Stick or solid fiberglass) The last four to five feet was shored up with a cross wra
