I understand perfectly why it was removed, I just asked about the trumpet guides. The only thing I am slightly unsure on is why the pic was removed, but a standardized e-mail let me know possible reasons. I am very up to date on what I did wrong in the first post. Oh, I think I get it, when I said gone the way of the dinosaurs I meant why aren't they used any more not why was it removed from her

I recently came across some old trumpet guides for sale and I have never seen or heard of anything like these things. They were pretty cool looking so I was wondering why they seem to have gone the way of the dinosaurs. I heard from the seller that the guides used to be used on bamboo rods and such and I just wanted to know if anybody could give me the 411 on these things. I

I don't have much to add on the lathe portion, but once you add rollers for the rod skateboard or rollerblade bearings with 22mm round o-rings works awesome. I just made my third rod wrapper and I used the bearings and they work awesome. James

I think that part of the reason that the pistol grips were used was because the casting rods then were really really short because the rods were so limp. Those super short, limp, light rods could easily be casted with one hand. I am just thinking out loud. James

I used reamers that I made myself from the reamer grit that mud hole sells and for just about 5$ you get enough grit to make like 10 reamers. They have worked on everything I have tried and they cut very nice. James

I have primarily heard that cheese cloth works best, but I have been using gauze and high quality art brushes to apply and they both work fine. Good luck! James

I am so glad to hear it. I wasn't able to go last year, (my first year of knowing about it) but this year come @#$%& or high water nothing will stop me. I can't wait to meet the giants of this world, attend the seminars, actually get to handle components that I have only been able to see online or even worse, just heard about and of course to get some killer deals. And if the trend that I have he

You will get a lot of great info on here, but if you are just starting out and feel the way I do about it and want ot know the things that I did when I started then a post like this will give you some helpful tidbits but contacting one of the more experienced builders through e-mail or some will even give you their number to talk to them about things. First and foremost, you need to unblock your

I just happened to find myself in Orlando visiting family and I darn near had to sell a kidney to visit Mudhole. Those of you who know me know I am still pretty new to rod building and so I have never been at a store that sells rod building components, I have had ot imagine what everything will be like from a catalog or website. I took an epic trip that riveled Harold and Kumar go to White Castle

Ok, yes I re read it last night and even though I must have missed that part I did exactly that and left it over night to no avail. I think that for the most part I will have to reserve that type of halo paper for my future salt rod projects. Thanks everyone, big help as usual. James

Tom, I have read and re read that article, apparently, I need to adjust my medication because I do not remember anything about a clamp. I will re read it again tonight. Thanks a lot everyone, even though I am glad that there are reasons for my problems I was kinda hoping that I was making a simple mistake because of a brain fart, less to fix. No such luck. Thanks everyone. James

Ok, yes I did get the hographic hyper plaid from Texas craft paper, glad to know that I bought the wrong stuff, but at least I know what to get now. Thanks for the help, and I will look for the holographic silver shine and I will let the ink dry longer and I will use the rotary cutter that I just bought specifically for decals. I will also be more careful with the way that I handle the decals. Th

Ok, for the last couple of days I have been trying to work with the halographic decals and I have come across two problems that i cannot solve. First and foremost the one that is giving me the most trouble is that the decal media seems to thick or stiff, or rigid or whatever because I cannot get the decal to bend easily enough for it to stay stuck on the blank. The edges keep on pulling up all th

I just got done laying out a rod for my uncle with the same guides, and he insists that I use 10 guides on a 7' heavy power fast action rod all double foot and not acid wrapped. I did a static test and had the same problem. I am wondering what to do too. I would just wrap it my way and have him use it and I am sure that he would like it but he did spend 300.00 in parts so I feel I should wrap it

If you go to an automotive paint supply store they will set you up with a can of clear coat, can of reducer, can of hardener and a little bit of flex additive for obvious reasons and that will by far be the most resiliant top coat possible. I am about to change over to this method. This stuff is crazy gnarly though and you need a recpirator and any type of sprayer should work. Hope it helps. Jam

Corn huskers lotion is the best I have heard of and I don't use gloves while epoxying for the same reason that you have found. heck, sometimes I am abscent minded and I track epoxy all over the rod even when I'm not wearing gloves. lol Good luck Duane. James

Kyle, Of course Jason is right, I bought Tom Kirkman's book on the urging of this entire board it seems and I am very happy with the purchase. Even though it sounds like you are not overly concerned with price copies of Tom's book can be had on Amazon for extremely cheap. Also, I really think that you will find that building your own rods will not save you money from off the rack rods, or at le

Awesome, thanks, thats why I always go to you guys, I had no idea that there was so much thought put into such a feature and I personally still don't like it because it seems like I have to work around it. It sounds like I offended some people and I don't know wny, I have every confidence that phenix makes amazing products that is why i talked my customer out of a 300.00 G Loomis and into this P

I have several ideas that are acceptable to me but my customer is very precise on what he wants and seeings as how he has paid 300.00 in materials I don't blame him for wanting what he wants. I will present him with such plans only if no one on here can tell me what to do about it. Why would Phenix do such a stupid thing, how about including a decal with the rod information on it separate from th

I use threadmaster lite and it is the only finish that I have ever used. I have found that with my method no matter the size of the batch that i am mixing up the amount of bubbles in the mix can be counted on one hand if looking through a magnifying glass. What i do is I put the bottles in front of my heater until the bottle is good and warm even pliable, this not only lessens the bubbles but als

I just received a Phenix blank that I ordered for a customer and there is an issue with the blank that is making me pull my hair out. The blank came with a sort of, I don't know, painted on decal or something that can be scraped off with a razor blade but the finish on the blank is not under the "decal" and the decal is half under my planned split grip and half exposed, to make things w

Joe, do you know of anywhere that a person might be able to find that sort of thing around town to avoid shipping? That is a pretty nice idea that i would love to try. Joe, I just finished wrapping a rod last night and for the tip top wrap I used one of the thread colors I was already using and then just some glow in the dark thread from Walmart so I hope that it does end up working with fini

Shipping would have cost me more than the part, I have run into similar situations with mudhole more than once. And besides I am kind of proud of figuring out a solution to a somewhat complicated challenge. James

I considered that, but I thought that even with practice it would be near impossible to achieve the extremely smooth, concentric, even results that I have seen in the pictures section. Thanks, I appreciate the help as usual Mike, or should I just start calling you Professor? After all I do learn more from you than I do from my other Professors, lol. I will give it a try, thanks.
