Right, in fact, there were more casting and boat rods made from split bamboo than fly rods. I don't believe I have ever seen a split bamboo spinning rod, as spinning didn't become popular on these shores until after WWII when fiberglass was starting to take over. ..................

Your thread is filled with a lubricant - it's a sewing thread, not a rod building thread. It's lubed so as to move through the machine parts of sewing equipment easily. That lubricant, silicone probably, repelled your finish. ................

Nothing has changed. You can upload larger photos, but they may time out (this has always been the case) and they won't display with any more detail than the 800 or 1000 pixel square photos do. There is a limit to what the internet and your computer monitor can display and larger photos just waste server space (and may time out when uploading). Whether or not something times out depends mainly

Still not sure what you're trying to do. On a spinning rod you have a choke guide at a position that takes the line from the reel and redirects it onto a slightly different path. The location is found based on the spool upsweep or the newer method of using a factor of 27 times the spool diameter. On a casting reel the line comes off flat along the rod. There is no need to redirect anything an

Rich advocated 4 to 5 inches for each guide because it's a safe bet - it works and you're sure to have adequate stress distribution and still have a rod that will cast farther than you can effectively fish it. However, if you want to tweak the spacing and use a more progressive distance between guides, that's fine too. ................

No, all is well. Are you trying to upload a very large image? Larger than about 1000 pixels square is not only unnecessary, but may "time out." If you fail to select a category to put your photos into you'll get an error message. This is the single most common user error. ..............

As I work on the RodMaker issue that is due in February, I've been pleased to include another new technique that will break new ground for custom rod builders. Bobby Feazel has written an outstanding article pertaining to custom rod inscriptions and within are methods and techniques that allow custom builders to do things they've never before been able to do in regard to making and applying insig

No transition guides for Simple Spiral. None. The line goes straight from top to bottom as it wishes. The guide that can be placed on the side doesn't transition the line - it simply keeps it from rubbing the blank. It's not a part of the normal overall guide spacing. There are single 90 degree transition spiral systems, but these are not the same as the Simple Spiral. ..................

What I'm saying is that the same size guide, used in either the NGC or the Cone of Flight System, is going to give the same results as far as line slap goes. You can try a 40, although I think it may increase the line slap even more as it will allow larger coils to carry further up the rod. But, if the additional height ends up helping, you can certainly use the 40 in the NGC system. Just plo

RodMaker Volume 10 #3 has a very in-depth article on fishing rod handle and grip ergonomics. Most pre-formed grips are entirely wrong in size and shape for optimum use by the human hand. You can certainly do much better on your own. Making your own grips isn't hard, but will require some practice. Most cork rings are sized 1-1/4 inch diameter which is plenty to start with. They're already rou

The location and type of butt guide you have are not exclusive to the NGC. If you used the Cone of Flight system and put the same butt guide on there at the same locations, you'll have the same line slap. The NGC isn't your problem. This isn't a problem with the NGC - it has to do with your line, the butt guide and the height and/or spacing. ............

You'll lose a little power - it'll be like fishing a little shorter rod than a standard 9 foot blank (I'm assuming this is a 9 footer) because were you locate your fighting hand matters and it will be 3 inches further forward than usual. But overall, I'd go with what Ted said, it really won't make all that much difference. ..........

I don't think you want to be moving the guides "out." Make sure the butt guide falls within the distance listed in the article. With the fine diameter Fireline, you may find that a butt guide place just 20 to 21 inches from the reel spool face will be best. A closer butt guide with more height will be better than lower and farther out. Ideally, with that line, you'd want a small ring

I have seen ceramics that were grooved by braid, but these were guides found on inexpensive discount store rods. I don't think any of the quality ceramic guides offered to custom rod builders by the reputable suppliers these days will be damaged by any braided line. ..............

I believe they're still in business and still producing roller guides. One very unique design, I think it's theirs, entails a roller that can be slid off the base which enables you to remove the roller portion for easier cleaning and lubing. The feet/legs stay in place on the blank. I had contacted them in Italy some years ago about doing a story on these guides, but they said that demand ou

Speaking of the Expo, it's the only place where you can see nearly ever power wrapper made. About the only exceptions are the Flex Coat powered units and the Custom Power Wrap machine. Friction is a non-issue. Remember that friction is largely a function of how much force is pressing two surfaces together. On the cast, there is very little friction between the guides and line. Dropping or adding one guide isn't going to change much in that regard. Weight is another matter altogether and will have a much greater effect on casting distance. Any weight you can remove will a

There are differing grades and quality of tape. Some is not so good, but most all sticks. In fact, the cheaper varieties stick almost too well - you can't get the adhesive residue off. You're almost certainly getting your fingers on the adhesive and negating its ability to stick. Try this - for taping a guide to the blank, cut or tear a strip sufficient to hold the guide but leave yoursel

I've done it with 9 guides plus tiptop many times. Never had any problem with line wrapping around the blank. I'd say that on most 9 foot fly rods, however, 9 guides plus tiptop is the very minimum you should try to get by with. .............
