61. Painting a blank
I need to paint a portion of a bright pink blank white because I want to use white threads in a dec butt wrap and I don't want any bleed through (yes, I will be using CP). I have some of the small bottles of acrylic craft paint. Is this a good option or should I get something else?

Thanks guys. I'll look into the one from Angler's Roost. I did discover the PacBay Quickline in my search. A search for feedback on this line provided meager results but common cents data looks promising. Has anyone used one of the Quickline flyrods to give a review?

Just checked... Greys and Echo does not sell blanks, only finished rods. Dan Craft can put one together form multiple rods that have done a good job (I'm told). Other options?

A friend is looking for a good blank to be used in flyfishing comps (euro-style nymphing mostly). I heard good reviews of the Grey's Streamflex 10', 4wt. I'll seek out pricing on this blank but wonder if others know of other options I should consider.

Follow-up question.... What is the preferred solvent with which to thin 2part epoxy?

Oh, yes. Absolutely correct. Not my tutorial. Just finishing off a rod on which I attempt the same thing so it was fresh in my mind where I had seen it. Its pretty easy and straight forward.

Here's a good one if you are looking for the spiral effect.

I used it for a very small part of a project (last minute decision and didn't want to wait on shipping). It worked well for me. It does shift quite a bit so definitely use CP if you want to keep the color. I think it behaves a lot like Madeira. I tested it without CP and Threadmaster epoxy and didn't see any issues with fisheyes or other defects.

Haven't tested over paint. Wouldn't the metallic silver tinsel give a better effect?

I plan to put down a base of silver flat tinsel. I did a test with orange that looked pretty good so I assume it will work with the red as well. It is on a little 3wt fly rod so don't want to do a double wrap of thread.

I am going to do some candy apple red guide wraps. I would like to use Madeira 40 since I am getting used to working with it. Does anyone have a recommendation of what color will give me the best effect. I will use the same color in a butt wrap but will use CP for the butt wrap (not on the guide wraps).

Great coaching, thanks guys. I will have to work with my cheapo dryer as it has a slight wobble to it. I think i can get it under control. It turns about 20 RPM so I should be able to get it to work. I'll figure out something to use for a hand rest. Thanks again.
But just to confirm; it sounds like no one is using a masking tape of any type.

I was looking at Doug's photo of his guide wrap (very handsome wrap, Doug). And it got me thinking. I've got 5 rods under my belt, each an improvement on the previous. One of the things that I need to improve is the finish edge of my epoxy. I want that perfectly straight razor edge and I haven't quite got it yet. I once tried using scotch tape as a masking edge but it didn't work too well. Anyo

Thanks for the advice guys. I have some of the U40 so I will use that on the cork.

Well I hope I didn't screw up. I glued this together the other day with Elmers woodworking glue. It doesn't say anything about being waterproof on the bottle. I glued it up before Jay's comment about the exterior type (didn't know there was more than one). So before I commit to gluing this to the blank I would like to see what others think. Should I go with my repaired grip done with standard Elm

76. Broken Cork Grip
I received a grip in the mail that was slightly abused by the USPS. Its broken in 2 but the pieces marry back up cleanly. I believe I can glue back together without a scar. I plan to use a piece of threaded rod with necessary washers and nuts to use as a clamp. I have the following in-house: Rodbond, Gorilla Glue, Elmers Wood Glue. Which would give me the best results? Any other tips appreciated

Great notes already. Thanks guys. Keep them coming.
And Ken, you're right. It was the black thread that I set as real tight. I was diligent on pulling the pattern threads tight each time I moved them and starting from the center of the pattern I pulled each thread left and right after tie off was done. My plan is to put this pattern over the scar of a broken rod repair.

I've done one and only tiger wrap. I'm posting because it was exactly as you described, black and silver base, blue overwrap, 3 coats epoxy in between. I'm not real keen on it. I think the reason is the silver. Its just a bit too sparkly for me. Strangely, it looks great on overcast days though. If I were doing it again I would probably do it with Tom's suggested black and white base.

I posted a pic of my first attempt at weaving. I did it on a scrap blank for practice. I tried doing it first with an 'old school' method a friend explained and nearly blew a gasket. I looked and studied and figured out how to make my own loom/jig that actually worked pretty well. The weave went pretty straightforward with a surprisingly low level of cursing. It turned out well but I think I will

Does anyone know of a source where I can get a pre-made acrylic insert for a skeleton fly seat? I don't do any turning of my own so need one already done.

Well, now its a toss up. The article says use a plug and an outer sleeve. Roger's response (and another rodbuilding friend) says not necessary since its down in the butt section of a 4 pc rod. I would rather not put the outer sleeve if its not necessary for aesthetic reasons but the owner uses the rod for NY salmon fishing. Will I be open to failure if I don't out the outer sleeve on or will the

I'm glad to have seen this post. I am doing a repair for a friend. Broke the butt section of an 8wt fly rod. I fitted it with internally with a 6" section of a scrap blank (3" overlap at each end because of some splintering). I was just going to just wrap over the existing scar and then epoxy. Do I need to put a piece of blank over the outside as well?

I've worked with metallics in guide and butt wraps. I too learned that control of thread tension resolves most of the problems. Thanks for the quick responses.

I'm going to teach myself how to do a simple one color weave. Would it be a mistake to use a metallic thread? I want to do a deep metallic blue over regular black background.

Yeah, thanks Woody.
This last wrap I loosened up from my previous wraps and I noticed it was easier all around. Maybe a bit more will do the trick.

89. 3rd Closed Wrap
This was my third attempt at a closed wrap. I am getting better with each one and faster too. Couldn't quite close it though. Had 2 threads that had to be overlapped in the black background. You can't see them in the final work but I know they're there. They just wouldn't fit no matter how hard I packed. I'll get it on my next one though... I know I can, I know I can.
Do any of you burnish

My camera shoots at 10mp. I adjusted the size of the file with editing software. You should be able to find this option with whatever you use to manipulate your photos.
