What would a zippo hurt if you used indirect heat,(from the side of the flame?

I agree with ted, if you decide to do it, I would use permagloss rather than an epoxy over the thread where the hook will be kept.

One drawback is that even after putting a good coat of finish on it the wire hooks and barbs will eventually cut through the finish and thread wraps, and I can't see any way to get around it.

Some of your rods will sell just because they are hand made locally. I think they will easily sell sitting next to a 40.00 rod. The thing is, People are willing to spend a little more for something nicer and better, but it has to be within reach. At 80-100.00 it is within reach for a guy that will buy a 40.00 rod, he just may have to save for another week or two. Price the rods at 150.00 and

Thanks a lot, My drying motor is a 4 RPM Rotisserie motor but it works well, but I will need to get me a higher RPM motor for applying the finish. I have often thought while waiting for the rod to go around that this would be easier to do with a faster motor. I have used heat on my finish at times but it always seemed the duragloss LS would bubble more with heat, so I didn't think to try that.

Personally I can never disrespect a 20.00 rod and reel. I grew up on them , and still have a few of them that I have used and abused for years. However, none have ever fit my exact wants or needs in terms of fit finish and feel. I get more gratification from selling a rod for too little to a guy who otherwise could not afford a custom rod. Because lets face it, a custom rod should be far high

I have been using Duragloss LS Supreme and I like it but it takes about 3 thick tedious coats to get it how I want it and at times it still isn't right. So, I was at academy sports a while back and I picked up a Flexcoat Hi Build syringe set. Well I was building a rod for myself, a 9' 7 weight and I decided to try it. I love the ease of putting it on but I have a complaint and a question. The

I haven't considered this but I do it all the time. I hardly ever make a profit off of a rod I build. But, I cannot afford to only build rods for myself and continue to get practice. I look at it like gunsmithing I do, The law on that states that if I do it "occasionally" I do not have to have an FFL or carry a business license. Occasionally is not defined where I read that law. I

I would definitely stick with sage's recommended guide spacing . Also a Nice looking lightweight reel seat such as this one . And at least a AAAA grade cork reverse half wells grip, make sure you order one with a cut out because you can do it your self but if you do I would order 2, one to practice with and one that already has the cutout for when you get mad. Your guides are a matter of perso

Yeah Academy is where I usually get color preserver and some of my thread. Appreciate it though.

OK, Thanks Roger, I didn't get it finished before today but I will be finishing it Monday or Tuesday, I am going to memphis tomorrow so I am going to try to get some color preserver while I am there, if I can't I will try the Future. I knew I was going to the Little Red River today to go fishing and I wanted to have the rod done so I could use it. I ended up getting sick for the last few days a

You are correct, and I have not built a rod yet for myself that I was happy with the first time. so I figure this one will be no different. I appreciate all suggestions and agree that the color preserver is pretty much indispensable if I am going to use it. I will probably go without. I put several wraps on an old rod and tried several things all that I have mentioned and more and have not be

I have some clear acrylic in a spray can, could I spray half the can in a cup then brush it on. I really don't want the thread to darken. My resources are walmart and ace hardware here, I live in a town of 3500. exactly in between memphis and little rock. Nothing is close. I think I will call the owner of macks prairie wings in stuttgart and see if I can get him to start carrying rod buildin

OK, Sorry to be so persistent, but I found the post on elmers glue, but what about spar urethane? I know it won't hurt the rod any but will it bleed the colors on the thread?

By the way, It is my rod, so if I have to tear it down later on, it isn't necessarily acceptable to me but if it will look good and the rod will hold together for the weekend I will be happy.

OK, Gotta have a rod done by saturday, and I am out of CP (18 month old daughter dumped it). Cannot drive 65 miles to little Rock to buy some tonight. Any household chemicals that will work? I considered diluting some elmers glue with water will that work, has anyone tried it? I usually order everything I need but this just came up. Gonna finish it with perma gloss if that matters. Thanks

Its a 6 weight, still not sure what model, but it is not a SCII, I think it is an SCIII or IV the measurements line up with two or three in those two lines.

I will try that Monday, I did something similar but the instructions the guy gave just said take 1/10 of the length from the end of the grip to the tip, clamp the handle to a table and weight the tip till it goes down 1/10th of the length of the grip to tip which is 9.8 inches in this case. That took 14.5 grams then he gave a table and said divide that by the 9.8 and get the number which was 1.4

That sage 3000 series reel is amazing on that rod, I think the whole setup weighs about 3 ounces rod, line, reel, leader and all. Have you casted one? Think slow smooth movements and timing is king. I am about to sell a boat motor so I can get one, they are amazing.

Lots of places to get info on what weight is best for what and what each type of action is good for. I won't trout fish with over a 6 and I usually can be found with a 2 to a 4. Here is a quick summation of the basics of selecting a fly rod, and you can get from it what the guy will be basically looking for.

OK Got a St. Croix blank, I think it is a factory second, not marked. It is brown, the guy said it was a 2003 or 2004 model he thinks it is an SCII. Blank is dark brown, butt is I think .375 but I did not have a caliper on a tape measure it looked like 3/8 and that would be .375 but it could be + or - a few due to the lack of precision, 9ft long 4 piece either a 4.5 or 5.0 tip, hard to tell, a

I am going to try this, I like it. When I file the feet though I will sand them after filing with 400 800 and 1000 grit sand paper so it looks nice when finished. I will post pictures in a month or so and let you guys know how it turns out. On another note, don't feel bad, I learned to build rods by trial and error with very little instruction (which is to say my brother in law told me what

I have used several sets of Cabelas single foot guides and never had an issue with them being straight, They are less expensive and ask me in another year how the finish is holding up because I have only had them on my rods for about 6 months but so far so good. I did have that problem with some fuji ones I used once, but it was just one guide and it was glaringly obvious.

I saw on some site where you can buy ugly stick blanks. Why not go that route? It is part fiberglass isn't it? Or you could sang the finish off the tip of most fiberglass rods I have seen, there is a flexible white glow paint we used to use while I was in the navy, I know it would be easy to find. Then go over it with 2 coats of permagloss and you have something very close to what he is looki

I am like George I make my own, I always have several sizes of line anyway so I don't have to buy anything but tippet. I start with 17# then 12 to 8# fluorocarbon, and if fishing for bream or bass stop there, but when fishing for trout I go ahead and finish with a proper taper to 6lb fluoro, 4x and 6x if using 18 or smaller flies. I know I can see a 4x better than a 6x so I assume a trout can

OK, A newb here, so please don't assume I am an idiot. No one taught me to build rods, my brother in law told me how to start and off I went. I always understood that the finish should be applied while the rod was rotating on the drying motor. All of the rods I have done, I have finished while they were rotating. Granted the first couple looked awful, but I assumed it was a combination of th

I have only built eight rods but the only one I have had fail is the ONE, which I fish with the most, that I did not use it on. My boat was stolen by some kids off the edge of a creek at night outside my tent. they just went joy riding and then let it go down the river. It was a week before I could get back up there to get it and rain filled the boat up and my favorite fly rod lay there and s
